nice onee JBBury on your 1:25 half..i'm with Richard on this...racing is destructive and not constructive like training....our bodies get used to training at say 90%HR and recover quickly, but throw in say a 10K run at 95-97%HR for say 40mins or a race pace half marathon and the damage to your cardio and muscular systems is something that your body doesn't have to deal with in training and recovery takes time. I always try and remember that when training/racing i'm stressing the body and breaking it down and that its only on the rest days that i'm actually getting fitter. I also use this as a coping mechanism for recovery weeks and tapering . Your body knows when its recovered and i reckon its best just to go with the flow or take a few days off. Theres no way you'll have lost any fitness in two weeks of 'plodding' and it may just be that you mentally need a break. I find i'm often on a bit of a 'downer' after a big race until i plan in the next one

That sub 36 is do-able KP!! As Richard says, consistent training with good quality sessions and not doing mileage just for the sake of it will pay dividends.
Never done a massive mileage, normally hit about 50/week during the winter and less in the summer when I'm aiming for shorter distances on the track.

I'm in too! I need a new target after my marathon debut. I think I should be capable of a 38 something 10k once I'm 100% recovered from London (based on my 1:24 half marathon in March). I've got a 10k pencilled in for the start of June, so we'll see then.

cheers sensible, see i read 50m/week and think crikey how can you manage that and not think its BIG miles. I'm a consistent 15-25m/week man, most of which is quality tempo, interval or hilly runs and the thought of doubling that doesn't seem remotely feasible. Perhaps i see 50m/wk as big miles because i never run on consecutive days and rarely run more than 3 times/week. How do your legs recover if you are running, i assume, every day? Is more miles the key do you think or d'ya reckon i could still do it on 20-30m/wk concentrating on quality?

I think it's perfectly reasonable to run sub 36 on 3 runs a week or 20-30 miles/week, as long as those 3 runs are decent quality.
I tend to run 6 days a week but have built up to that slowly and very occasionally train twice a day, but only because my work hours are flexible and allow for that. I always have one day off a week for physical (and mental) recovery!! I don't run just to do races, I also run because it's enjoyable, stress-relieving and part of my life.

I did my second 10k race on saturday (03/05/08) morning... 51:30
2 min off my PB but not as fast as i'd hoped (goal was 45 min)
I'd be VERY surprised if i go under 40 min this year but its not such a bad thing to have goals that seem out of reach, right?

If you can run 5m in a sub 32, you should easily break 40 for a 10k. I can run 5 miles in 32 minutes, and run 5k in 38 minutes. You might even break 38 minutes.
