Do you have any particular training plan in mind for the 10K Adrian?

No. I find i cant stick to a training plan. I also like to do things myself. Im in good aerobic shape, just need to bring in some speed work and LT stuff. Im lazy and so often just run without purpose. Once i focus on a goal i can improve pretty quickly.
I just need to sharpen up really. I thonk i could do some real damage to my PB.

Not well, 43:10 which is what I expected after a tough week. All training efforts felt tired so in the end my time was a bit better than I thought it would have been on the morning of the race.
Was a very warm start even at 10am and a lot of folk found it hard going apart from our club mate who won it in 29:24!!

Got a 10k in November to focus on along with cross country season beginning soon.

I've heard great things about Abbey Dash 10k, hope your training goes well ahead of it.

Gosh, it's a long time since anything happened in here. I'm afraid I am still not that close to going sub-42 but at least I have moved a bit closer since my last post.

I ran 44:40 in April of 2015 and although I've done a few 10k races since then I have never been able to even get under 45 minutes again. With a 5k PB of 20:50 this is crazy and extremely frustrating.

On Sunday I did the Heaton Harriers Memorial 10k on the Town Moor in Newcastle. This follows a very similar route to Newcastle parkrun but has two laps. I was hoping for 42:30-43:00 so intended to aim for 6:50 pace.

The first mile, just like Newcastle parkrun, was very congested and involves going through that silly single-file gate, which caused us to have to slow to a walk to get through. So my first split was 7:04 - not a great start.

I made up a bit of time on the next mile, with a 6:44. The third mile includes the nasty 4th km of parkrun which I dislike so much - a gradual uphill slog on a rough stony surface. My next split was 6:55 and I passed the 5k mark in 21:46.

So sub-43 was out of the question by now and 43:30 looking unlikely. I was starting to tire and was fully expecting my pace to slip outside 7s from this point on, but mile 4 and 5 came in at 6:54 and 6:53 respectively. So I just had to hang on for the 6th mile for a big PB. This meant once more up the nasty section and I was much slower second time round. 6th mile came in at 7:11, a bit poor but actually an identical pace to the average I ran at my previous fastest 10k.

Finally I turned left onto the nice runnable gentle downhill to the finish. Glancing at my watch I saw that 43:30 was not lost yet. I dug in and ran this last bit at 6:15 pace and finished in 43:26, a small negative split and a PB by 74 seconds.

As a course it is quite flat but with 3 miles of it on stony path rather than tarmac, it's not the quickest surface ever. Also it was quite congested in places, and not just the first mile.

My next 10k will be in April on a much quicker course so hopefully I'll be able to take another chunk off. It will be during my marathon taper so hopefully I'll be at peak fitness.

After three years of not improving I finally managed this earlier in the year.
Paisley 10k in August 41:33 followed by Stirling 10k a few weeks later in 41:14, felt I could go under 41 at Stirling but had a tough second half maybe went off a bit too quick.
Next years target is sub 40, I know I only broke 20 mins for 5k at the weekend but reckon I can carry that pace in for 10k next year.

To get sub 42 all I did was consistently run 25-30 miles a week all year with a mix of speed sessions, easy and long but only once beyond 12 miles at a half marathon.

Been reading this thread with interest as a sub-42 is my next big target.... around this time last year i managed my first sub-45. I then did 43:27 in the second half of the Sheffield half marathon earlier this year (this section is mainly flat/downhill but i was still stunned by it after running 11k uphill lol). So i spent much of the summer working towards a 10k race last month but in the build up ended up with a dose of man-flu/chest infection which wouldn't shift and a sore hip from being attacked by a drunken k**bhead in town the week before, resulting in me only managing two runs in three weeks before the event....... despite this i was proud to clock 43:35 ..... so i reckon if i had been fit then sub-43 would easily have been on the cards, kind of frustrating really but at least i know i can go faster
