Thanks Isabel - Im hoping to try a 5k time trial outdoors once the snow's thawed, so I'll let you know how they compare. Not overly scientific but hopefully my time will be in the same ballpark! I will also offer insight into the psychological differences I encounter (i.e. I'll waffle on about it a bit)

When i started running i was doing 5k in around 20mins and i thought i was hammering it, i kept thinking..how on earth am i going to do that twice for a 10k!!? But with some good speed and endurance training, and a bit of time, i did my 1st 10k in 37 mins, so just train hard and be patient =)

Last night on a club tmepo run I held on to a guy with a garmin who runs a 10k in under 40 and managed 5.3k in 20:02 on a hilly route. It doesnt take a descendant of Isacc Newton to work out that Ive managed a sub 20 5k and not even in a race! I even felt good at the end of it, felt very very confident.

Welcome to the club Pindar
Incidentally I never got round to trying a 5k outdoors, I just can't fit it in / risk it at the moment with my marathon training!

I know what you mean. I've cut the intensity of my intervals now I have just over 4 weeks to the big day. Not worth picking up a niggle!

Sounds similar to mind over matter. No pain, no gain, and all that.

It probably could, im only new at it but you can definately push yourself and refuse to give in, I think your brain wont let you fall off as easy as it will let you slow down outdoors but of course its easier on a treadmill !

A lot easier. I now believe I would have been a minute slower outdoors back when I wrote this post - Still finding 21mins pretty tough in training.
