If I go flat out over 60 metres I feel no pain at all. It's only at about the 70-80m mark that it begins to hurt. In fact, When I go for a short 4 mile run, I try and do a flat out 100m sprint halfway through. It really feels good. I love the feeling of speed

After 7 seconds flat out effort I normally roll over and fall asleep so never feel the pain!

I suppose there's running 5k, and there's racing 5k... immensely different in terms of pain/discomfort endured.

I find 5k's very hard to pace right - I ran my weekly 5k personal time trial today and thought I would try limiting my pace for the first 3k, with the intention of speeding up considerably in the last 2k. The end result was feeling totally knackered with a time a whole minute slower than last week's effort and I had nothing to give in the last 2k

Normally I think I cock it up by going off too quick and starting off at 4:55/k pace, which gets me home in about 24:40 - but maybe this is the best strategy afterall as I have been consistently improving with this strategy. Starting off slowly today, I felt I was playing catchup all the time because of the slower early pace - not sure why it took so much out of me though, although I did have my most mile-intensive week to date last week, so maybe that was still lingering around the legs

I am totally with you on this one. For whatever distance I run, if I go out slow I am never able to make it up at the end. My fastest times for 5k, 10k, 10 mile and half marathon have come from going out hard, easing off a little somewhere in the middle, and trying to hold it together at the end. I just find this works best for me.
