I can't say I've ever been staring at a runners groin area - I wouldn't worry JBBury, it's not going to happen, and besides, there will be people there looking far more silly!!!

That's a strange remark to make, Richard, considering you've just joined in with the discussion on the tights he'll be wearing at this race.......

it was referring to post #23 in which JB was commenting on feeling self conscious during the race in his new Gore tights, so IMO is on topic

I plan on running the route tomorrow at a steady pace to see how I go. I have been ultra busy at work and home recently, hence the reason I havent been on much.

Will give you a shout if I have a Sunday free....maybe this weekend actually. Will let you know JB!

That was terrible! Really poor run but the good thing is, it wasnt my fault.

Headed out and instantly I thought, brrr thats cold, but I soon warmed up. Now running along the meadows the path was covered in ice. Headed out past the commonwealth pool and the ice is getting less so head up Arthurs seat.....forget it!
The path was a sheet of ice and so I thought I would run on the road.....slip, slide, slip, PANIC, slide.....I didnt even get to the end of the first incline when I saw 2 people crossing the road on their hands and knees! The road was pure ice as well, it looked fine but it was anything but! I would have thought the council would have gritted one of the steepest roads in Edinburgh!

Keep this in mind anyone that might wish to do some training on the hill before the race! Im hoping to give it another go tomorrow so fingers crossed the ice melts by then.

Yikes! That does sound pretty treacherous. Again, I'm hoping they sufficiently grit it before the race otherwise we may as well bring ice skates People were crossing the road on hands and knees? that's insane. Were any cars attempting to get up there? Can't believe it hasn't been gritted.

nope, didnt see any cars. Just as well because I think I would have been trying to dodge them as well. If its not gritted for the race we will not be racing. It will be whoever finishes without anything broken wins!
Is Arthur's seat one way? Just wondering if they maybe closed the road at the other side.

I got up to the first bench, spoke to a lassie who was slipping all over the place and we both decided to turn round and come back down. I only have an hour for lunch and I reckon at the pace I was doing (11 min / mi!!) I would still be out there

That's absolutely insane!!! I thought you lot were joking when you were saying how icy it gets up there!

I'm guessing if people were crossing the road on hands and knees then cars wouldn't be able to get up there if they wanted to! Most cars are over a tonne, and the surface area of each tire in contact with the ground is only about that of a size 10 shoe... no hope at all

Owain's right... it must be gritted for the race, if not they either won't race or the event will never happen again once the insurance company has forked out record levels of compensation!

I have size 12 feet and I was skating I could have done with spikes to get up the hill! The dangerous bit was the ice wasnt flat either, it was bobbled so you couldnt even get full contact with the surface...

You spoke to LASSIE!!!!??? Was it like that scene in Groundhog Day when they keep falling over whilst holding onto each other?!

I wish I had somewhere nice to run at lunch-time - and office showers!

Running round arther's seat on a nice cold day with a light breeze would be lovely, amazing views of Edinburgh from the route as well, just a shame it was too cold!! Maybe tomorrow

Ye, I met Lassie on my way up and she told me there was a really icy bit round the corner and a wee boy had fallen down a mineshaft and his friends were all scared

There is an Edinburgh Athletic's club 5k road race on Sunday 21st December around Queen's drive, so basically the winter run route, although the opposiite direction, so steady ascent and steep decent. Not necessarily good for a PB. It's entry on the day and costs £6 for non-members. Over 15's only. I'm tempted to do this. What about you Owain?

Sunday the 21st, don't think I have anything planned....will let you know tonight though. Sounds like it could be a good training run if nothing else.

When I say a training run, I mean, I will arrive and run my guts out just because its a race

Out of interest JB, how do you plan on warming up for the race? 5k is usually my warm up time so I was thinking about going for an easy run before the race started.....then when I get to the start line all my muscles are warmed up and I should be able to push harder for the 3.something miles

I was planning on just going for a little jog (maybe a mile) before heading over then just doing some jogging on the spot. Not really a problem for me as I never bother warming up before runs, even if I'm doing fast time trials. My body seems to cope ok with that, but I will probably do something before this race as I expect to go out pretty fast.
