I think everybody should aim to improve their running speed and/or distance, but success is all relative. Somebody who is successful in getting their pace down from 12 mins to 10 mins has been just as successful as someone who goes from 8mins to 6 mins. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how fast or slow you drag your body around a circuit. It's the fact that you've gone out there and done it, and you feel good about it. And to be honest, if when you lose the 2 stone excess weight, your times will speed up a hell of a lot. It only takes 3 or 4 excess pounds for my times to dip.

Our bodies are constructed more or less the same and should function in similar ways. Running is the most natural of all exercises, though some are built more for sprinting than long or middle distances. I couldn't run until I was 54 years old - because my MIND never got into running mode. When, due to circumstances, I re-programmed it to get some exercise as an alternative to work, I discovered I could move pretty fast. So if you want to run faster and race better, you've first of all got to THINK it. And that means setting your sights on something a little better than 12-minute mile pace - gradually reducing it to 11, 10, 9 or maybe sub-6 minute mile pace. Stop thinking 'I wish' and change it to 'I will'. To be able to run freely and naturally is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world. It's worth thinking about!
Cheers!

I would like to thank RF for the motivation I got from reading this! When I usually go to the gym I stick the treadmill on to the speed of 8 and then just plough out the miles, last night I thought, why settle for something I know I can do, why not push myself a bit more and boy am I glad I did! 8.5 miles in 57mins, I was really happy with that pace and the reason I managed the pace was because I kept on telling myself that I could do it.

Before I was thinking 8 is as much as I can do, so when I put it to 8.5 I got out of breath and my head told me my body was tired, even when my body was handling it all perfectly well.....so thank you for your motivation speech

Sorry if this is a bit off topic!

O.

Owain.

I think we have all gained something from having RF as part of this forum.

He really is a true inspiration.

You should maybe look back at some of his past posts,

Great run Owain! 6:42 minutes per mile for that distance is bloody good! Sounds to me like your half marathon is going to be a breeze

btw... is 8.5 miles your longest run so far? if so you should be able to cover a lot further if you knock the pace down a bit!

Ye its the longest I have done, the Marathon planner from the Edinburgh Marathon website said I shoudl do a 50min easy run. I thought I would up the tempo a bit rather than do an easy run since I am trying to get my pace up.

Tomorrow is interval training, 12 x 2min fast so will see how that goes.

2008 is the year when I hope to get rid of the belly and I think I'm on track for that

O.
