Advice wanted

Hi All

I am new here

just wondered if anyone can help me

I have started running on a running machine i have in the garage
i have been running now every other day for about 9 weeks maybe a little longer.

I am running 3 miles in just under 30 mins, obviously i want to build it up to more miles in a lower time, just really after some advice really on what i need to do etc

is it a good idea to run every day?

I am also a insulin diabetic have been for over 20 years, when my blood sugar does drop i eat a banana to boost my sugars up, is this good as i heard they are full of energy etc

I could run more but due to getting to 3 miles my legs really ache and hurt, i know the saying no pain no gain but will this get better the more i run etc

my heart rate is about 132-140 when on a full run...... good or bad ?

is it harder running outside than what it is on a machine?

i want to be able to do fun runs and charity runs etc what do i need to do like training wise?

any advice would be much appreciated thats for sure

Many Thanks
Kaz

Hi Kaz,

Running every day is a bad idea, quickest way to picking up an injury, my advice would be to incorporate some rest days as part of training. I much prefer running outdoors that on a machine but i find my knees like it if I do a bit of both.

3 miles in 30 mis sounds good to me, but do you have a proper pair of running trainers, as you are feeling discomfort at 3 miles it sounds like you are either doing too much or have a *bum* pair or runners shoes.

And as for being a insulin diabetic, cann't comment other than say I always try and have a couple of Bananas before going on a run.

Cheers

G.

Hi G

Yeah I bought a pair of Nike runners :S from a sport shop they are the soft running trainers.

yeah I was trying to tell my other half about running every day i did hear about it that it can be bad for you.Because i want to get my fitness levels up and of course loose weight etc i thought about getting a cross trainer as well and use that in between the running.

when the aching comes it tends to be only in my right leg if it weren't for that i could do more but it really aches. it never use to but recently it has, maybe i have picked up a slight injury or something, i dont know.

Cheers
Kaz

Hey I can never comment much on how to run probably but I can on the insulin diabetic thing.

Running is very good (or any exercise) for a diabetic and can help regulate your blood sugar levels much better. If your going to do exercise, I suggest you eat 30 minutes before and if you feel low on energy in the middle of your run, eating something like a banana is good (or any type of fruit). There will be specific guidelines on giving your insulin and what dose before excercise so maybe see your GP about that or look it up. If you do decide to exercise outside your garage make sure you take a diabetic ID with you. Just in case.

O and I need to know your normal heart rate before I comment on it

Hi Kaz,
Welcome to the forum - you said you bought your shoes from a sports shop? Was this a specialist running shop or a high street chain like JJB because it sounds like you might have the wrong sort of shoes for your running style.

Your HR is lower than mine. HR whilst exercising isn't necessarily an indicator of fitness as you could naturally have a high maximum heart rate (this is genetetic rather than fitness related). Your resting HR is an indicator of fitness.

Other than your legs aching how do you feel when you are running? Do you ever feel dizzy or sick? Its normal for your muscles to ache a little after you up the intensity of exercise but your body should adapt eventually.

Hi Kaz

Running outside is "different" to running on a machine. I find it easier if anything, because you get fresh air to breath and the scenery keeps changing.

If one leg hurts, it could be shoes, or you may just want to rest for a couple of days.

Good luck

Thanks Guys for the advice

ok when sat and chilled my HR is 91. hmmm

I am a well controlled diabetic bloods run between 4.5 and 6 so thats good, i tend to throw the odd hypo but i always have something with me

Hmmmm shoes were from a shop in Banbury cant remember the name of it it was a sport shop. i have never had trainers like it they are so comfortable to run in, my feet dont hurt at all, and they never rubbed or rub... its just the my leg really aches when i'm near 3 mile. I feel fine when i am running, i dont feel dizzy and not totally out of breath thats how i feel i can do more but just recently the leg has been hurting etc all very strange as the muscles feel fine a while after.

I think i will tackle the outdoors just that i am a little paranoid in going out and everyone seeing me lol also worried incase i trip or something, sounds terrible huh but i know it could be better for me

I have started the fitness regime because i had a baby 14 months ago and since then i had nothing but trouble with my health ( long Story but will cut short) i nearly died 9 days after having him and then had a bleed in the eye, have had 8 ops on eye to recover sight. so since then i wanted to look after myself more and had the all clear from doc etc to exercise again, i use to run a few years ago etc. so hence why i want to get fit and stay fit. I want to be able to do the odd charity run etc

Cheers Guys

Hi Kaz Welcome to the forum.

Remember you have only been running again for 9 weeks, if you are doing 3 miles each time at the same pace, your body might not be recovering and could explain the pain. Perhaps incorporate a couple of two milers at a slower pace.

I was nervous the first time a ran outside on my own and I fell over to my shame ha ha, but I wouldn't change it for anything now. I also have a treadmill and like Granty tend use both options as the treadmill is kinder to the joints.

Banana is great pre run on a short distance but if you decide to up the distances in time porridge is a great source of engery.

Go on get out there

TT

I take it you have had problems with blood pressure at the birth? Well running helps regulate that to.

O and don't worry about what you look like, you should see me running. I have no prober clothes or trainers and generally just look a state

Hi Kaz,

I think you're doing great. 3 miles is a very respectable distance I think but as others say probably best to go every other day. I did the same as you and wanted to get some weight off quickly to begin with and started running nearly every day and started getting pains in my shins. What you could do is alternate between running one day and going for a brisk half hour walk on the other day.

Walking actually burns fat faster than running because you're exercising at a slightly lower intensity your body has time to convert fat into energy rather than converting what's in your stomach. Or something like that.

I can understand the falling over thing, I went A over T the other night and went down quite hard on a gravel track in the woods, but it's only grazes. I think you'd be hard pushed to actually break anything just falling over.

Are you still on any meds for blood pressure as this could explain the achey legs too.

I can recomend porridge with a mashed up banana and a handful of raisins. Good for the old cholestrol too.
