Thanks for the advice cheriton...

I'll maybe try the 'wild and free' approach on Friday on my next run...

I think there should be a "Male" section all this talk about generals and feeling things I feel a bit light headed

Other good anti-chaffing products are Brave Soldier or Bodyglide, I have used both of these and found they work great but if you get on with vaseline this is a much cheaper option.

Great news with your running progress

TT

Brave Soldier?? That's gotta be a joke? I can't believe there is some sort of lubrication Brave Soldier? Maybe Brave Navy Boy...!

Seriously though, I'll bear them in mind if the vaseline doesn't work.

Right... an update...

I went to Run And Become in Edinburgh yesterday and spoke to an extremely helpful member of staff. She got me to walk and run up and down the shop to see if she could spot a problem with my running style.

Apparently I roll in on my arches which is causing the blisters there. She recommeded several pairs of trainers and I ended up settling on some Nike Equalon+ 2 running shoes which are apparently good at correcting this problem.

I also bought a pair of double skinned socks (9 quid!!!!!).

I went out today and ran the 2.4 miles non-stop again (chuffed smile) in 20.53 which is my best time so far (my previous being 22.31). I wasn't trying to run it fast, in fact I'm trying to concentrate on finishing comfortably rather than speed but that was just the time I got...

My shins are very sore now. My left shin has been constantly sore to the touch since I started running but now they are both very sore which I'm attributing to the new shoes and I'm hoping it will go away.

I also ran with some vaseline on my 'important little places' and sans running grots (just using the mesh in my shorts for support). I found that I didn't get any chafing whatsoever!

So, in short, things are getting better. If I could just sort out this pain in my shins I'll hopefully be laughing....

The road. Tarmac and pavement. Why, would this make a difference?

Tarmac is quite a forgiving surface the road isn't have you access to grass to run on as it really helps to absorb a lot of the impact..
How long did you say you had been training for ?

If it's only a few weeks then sore shins is pretty much par for the course unfortunately
but keep at it and in a few weeks it'll all start to come right .

I wasn't very clear in my last reply i;m not saying just run on grass but if you do i'm pretty confident you'll notice a lot less discomfort in your shins .

I'm off out for a run now as she's just asked me to do the dishes!!

well done for your latest run!! that's great

If you've already had the pain in the shins, hopefully the new shoes will help sort it out over time... that's certainly what happened with me when I had my gait analysed.

Try a X trainer for a few sessions to give the shins a rest and then go back out ang see if that helps.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll see how it goes with the shins and the blisters but I'm hoping that things are going to get easier and I'll be able to settle into some proper regular training increasing my mileage over time...

As always, I'll be keeping you up to date...
