Hello, I am new.

I have put myself in for the race for life in June, I must be mad

I haven't done any running for 10 years now. I have 3 young children so I haven't had time to have a hobbie but now I am getting abit of my life back I want to get back into something I used to enjoy.

I am only 28, quite slim too. I am just under 7 stone but im only 5ft so im at a healthy weight for my petite frame but I am concerned I will lose weight once i start training, will this be the case? I just find it hard to gain weight and lose it easily if I miss even 1 meal very annoying. All my family are naturally slim.

Any tips on how to build up to the 5k?

You shouldn't as you will put some muscle on and get a more defined figure
Eat sensibly dependant on the sort of distances you intend to run

Start gradually to avoid injury and you'll be fine

good luck
Tke it easy !

and welcome to the forum

Theoretically, if you're going to be more active, your appetite should (I think) increase naturally to allow for the increased energy requirements, thus hopefully maintaining a weight balance.

Welcome Jing, I am also new to running and just starting on my fifth week. I have also entered the race for life but mine is in July. I am following a walk/run plan from a book called running made easy, but I had never run before so wanted to take it steady. I have the opposite problem to you, I want to lose weight, although only about half a stone. When i first started i was a bit fedup because i put 3lb on in the first week, but I seem to have lost that now but I am careful what I eat. I have noticed that my appetite has increased since starting so you will probably want to eat more. The most important thing Iswhat everyone said to me about the correct running shoes. I just got a gait test done on Friday and I was not wearing the correct shoes. I am hoping that having the correct type of shoes now should help. Good luck

Thank you all very much

So how do I know if I have ordered the correct running shoes? my feet roll inwards alot, I had an awful problem with it when I used to do ballet so I ordered shoes that were supposed to correct this problem when running.

Oh also can you buy something that tells you have far you have run? I am sure you can but I can't remember what they are called, lol!

Is 2 days a week enough training for a 5k? I was going to run one night a week then at the weekend once, trying to fit it in around the kids and hubby

Best advice is to have a gait analysis at a proper sports/running shop...correct shoes are very important especially as you build up mileage.

Perhaps not.

Depends on whether you just want to get round or do a good time? To improve I think 3 runs a week is a minimum...but vary what you do.
Any chance of joining a running club?

Welcome to the forum Jing

Do you mean a GPS watch, such as a Garmin?
I have one and find it very useful...measures distance, pace, time, even gives you a little map of your route. Some of the earlier models can be picked up quite cheaply on Ebay now

I'm not an expert on shoes, but my advice would be to go to a specialist running shop and they can examine your gait.

There's a site called mapmyrun.com and you can plot your running course on it and it will tell you how far you run.

If two days are all you can commit to for personal reasons, then it will have to be enough. I actually trained only once a week for my first 5k and twice a week for my first 10k.

It is manageable, just make sure you make the most of each run.

Thank you all so much.

Will any sports shop such as JJB be able to measure my foot/gait?

I may be able to squeeze in 3 runs a week, going to plan my nights and routes
