I think that I have trained some muscles better than when I just used to run and do no weights and I think that certain muscles are now stronger and less prone to injury.

I am not a body builder I am a defined but bigger guy, I am however going down a stone so I can compete running again and there is a fine balance between weight loss and wanting to keep on the weights as they almost work against each other

I think resistance training is a good thing to just add to cardio that you do, hell even I get a bit of resistance training in there a couple times a week, just do leg press and some shoulder and back stuff to vaguely mainting my climbing muscles (seeing as I haven't been in 2 months!!) Anyway I noticed quite a big difference from not doing much!

The fun thing I think is that I can lift way more than my body weight through several reps in several sets... harking to genetics, I actually think I was just born to be hulk, I have to be fairly careful with resistance training and stuff because I just build muscle WAY to easily. There are many a pubescent boy who wishes they had my biceps... or just scrawny guys in general hahaha.

Really? I mean of course you don't have to be skinny to run reasonably well, but I'm pretty sure it's not co-incidence that most elite runners aren't very bulky

Hi SJ, welcome to the site.

I've always secretly wanted to do some weight training but never seem to get round to start (those gym places are scary) so I might pick your brains some time.

Thanks for the welcome singularity.

A lean runner could make very goon noticable imrovements in quite a short time if they get the diet and training right. Dont be shy to ask

You just have to focus on yourself and ignore the posers or bigger guys and gals ... there is always going to be someone bigger and better just think that you can run 100 m without being out of breath cos most of the guys in my gym cant

Exactly, Cuprasi. There's a lot of guys in my gym exactly like that.

Needless to say, there was a bloke just ahead of me at last year's Glasgow half and he was shredded to say the least - the muscle didn't seem to be holding back that much.
