General Beginner Tips...

I'm really new to running and I enjoy it, I guess it helps I have an amazing lake to run by.
However Im sure that my technique is shocking and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this. Some things I am concerned about...

- My running doesn't seem to flow, it is almost 'plod, plod'
- I feel very jerky in my knees

Also, what kind of clothes should I be wearing? I made the stupid mistake this morning of running with a hoody on. It was cold when I left the house and half way through my run having seen a dozen or so other runners with thin t-shirts on I felt stupid.

Food wise, anything I should eat before my run? I had a banana this morning and some squash simply because the banana is obviously quick energy giving and the sugar in the squah will be burnt off giving energy as well but I still felt low on energy half way through!

Cheers

Hi,

I'll leave the running trchnique to a the expirenced members here as i'm sure mine is shocking to but works for me. You should wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I personally picked up a cheap running jacket from Lydl can you believe just to protect against the rain. I tend to run in just a t-shirt though as i'm a sweater (not a pleasant site believe me).

Think of it this way no other runner will be bothered what your wearing and if they are they aren't working hard enough!

I know it`s been said a thousand times before, but if you havn`t already done it,you must go to a specialist running shop to get your gait analysed and be fitted with the correct shoes.

As for the rest of your clothes.
Just wear what you are comfortable in.

All the best.

Dave.

I generally wear just a T-shirt and shorts but like the others have said, whatever you feel comfortable in will be fine.

I tend to eat Bananas, porridge, that sort of thing a couple of hours before I go (depends on how long I am running for), when I started running it was lack of liquid in me that I really struggled, make sure you are nicely hydrated before hand and take some with you.

As for running style, I'm still concious that I look like a 'plodder' but over time I've become a quicker plodder than I was at the beginning.

Correct footwear very important.

I was the same when I started "plod, plod, plod", but give it time and your plod will turn in to a confident stride.

There is an up and running near us in Huddersfield.
The staff in there are always very knowledgeable and helpful.
