A general run of the mill runner - advice please
Hi I've been doing abour 4-5 miles 3 times a week in a morning for just over a year, I complete this in about 45 mins. It's approx 10 minute miles that Im doing, not great I know, but just glad to get out there.
My question is - should I attempt to up the mileage ?
I suppose I would like to do a half marathon at some point, or is there an event that would suit better to break into like a 10k perhaps ?

If you want to go for it, I find the best motivation for me to train is to have a race in mind that I want to complete, I would suggest getting used to 10K's and then when comfortable go fo the half marathon. Good luck with it.

No reason why you shouldn't up the mileage if you're interested in running a half marathon at some point... a 10k wouldn't be a bad stepping stone either

There are no good or bad times it depends on the individual and what they are capable of, if your doing 10min miles then you're looking at just over 60mins for 10K.
My advice, work out target times once you are comfortable with the distance.

Okay, Ive just noticed the Edinburgh 10k is on 3rd May this year
I have all of a sudden expressed a great desire to run this - I dont know why all of a sudden, but hey, thats impulse. (also people are asking me "Why do you want to go through that pain ?")
What sort of training do I need to do based on the fact that I can do 4 miles quite comfortably in 45mins ?

I would increase you milage over the next couple of months, get used running 7 miles, this lets you know you can run the 6.2 miles without hitting your limits, it also gets your body used to the milage.
I will be running this race as well as will quite a few others I think.

Personally I would build up to be able to run the distance, once you can run 10K you can then work more on spped and strength. Tempo runs, interval speed session, hill work.

My tuppence.
First up the mileage of one run and shorten another. That way you don't increase the overall weekly mileage. Once that is okay lengthen the second run again.
Second. Get signed up for the race. Nothing like a goal for motivation.

Nice one DS! Was just writing about Edinburgh marathon and how it has motivated me to get my miles up and to follow my training plan. I will also be running the Edinburgh 10k, actually might try and organise another Scottish Runners Forum social because I think there are quite a few of us running this race......*goes off to start a new thread*
Let us know when you have signed up!
