Newbie underwear question <embarrassed red cheeks> no, not those cheeks...!

Hi,

Technically I'm a walker, so I hope no one shouts and throws things at me but I thought this the best place for getting some advice.

After sitting behind a desk for many years I've finally decided it's time for some exercise. I went along to Runners Needs and got my gait checked on the treadmill and camera and came away with a pair of Sauchony Progrid Omni 7's which are very comfortable.

My problem (girls look away now please) is that in this hot weather I have developed a very sore patch at the very top of the inside of my left thigh.

I'm walking 3.3 miles in 50 mins at a very brisk 1-2, 1-2 pace (brisk for me anyway) and I've been wearing those swimming shorts that look like normal shorts on the outside but have that kinda underwear lining built in and I'm not wearing any additional underwear with these shorts

This afternoon, I've bought a couple of pairs of the Nike Fit Dry running shorts so my question is should I wear underwear with these or does that affect how the internal lining wicks moisture away ?

Also, now that I've got the soreness, do I put anything on it, Vaseline, moisturising cream, Darcey Bussell ?

Many thanks for any advice you can give, hope you don't mind a walker posting on a runners forum !!!

Nick

Good for you for taking the decision - the first step is the hardest!

I wear Nike Dry Fit underneath, with some loose fitting shorts on top (optional really, to preserve modesty - don't want everyone getting jealous!) but i'm sure you'll get lots of different opinions.

Try caneston on the rash, works for me. Also a bit of Vaseline where the shorts rub may help prevent it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, will try those out.

Would you ever consider using talcum powder in the affected area before exercising or is that a bad idea ?

lanacane anti chaffe creame is really good at soothing.

also check the shorts around the area that the rubbing occurs. usually it occurs where skin rubs on skin, so you need to make sure all possible bits are covered either by lycra or whatever

i did a little experiment with body glide versus lanacane and the lanacane was the winner - really excellent - beat the body glide for me , but that was just my personal experience - i do have skin like a crocodile though i think both are good though

the other thing that made a massive difference to me was soaking my clothes that rubbed in comfort fabric conditioner after washing them.
made them much softer .

Fabric conditioner will affect the fabrics ability to wick moisture away from the skin though Still, if it works, you're onto a winner! lol.

Vaseline for me, cheap and cheerful and does the job a treat... I'd never wear underwear with running shorts.

I always wear underwear (briefs mainly) under my running shorts. It just seems like the civilised thing to do

sorry - only teasing

less is better for me - everything seems to chaff me ,and i get so hot , if i could get away with not wearing anything i would

JBBury if you can wear underwear and it not bother you , then you must be trim and fit , i'm so overweight and struggling that i cant carry any extra clothing

i even cut the labels out of my clothes to make them lighter and easiler to carry
