Shorts, Vests & socks

Would someone please tell me the advantages of wearing running gear ?
I have been running (out of the gym & onto the streets) for less than a year, and although I have completed a few 5 & 10k races I only wear standard shorts and t'shirts, would I do well to purchase some real stuff ?

I think in hotter weather, a lot has to be said for running vests but other than that I've found no net benefit in wearing clothes designed for running. The exception to that rule is socks, I have found since wearing running socks that blisters are a thing of the past.

I only run in 'running' stuff these days as its more comfortable. Breathable fabrics really make a difference if you sweat a lot like I do.

I find technical tee shirts a must. It could also be important in cold weather if you sweat and you are searing a cotton T you might get the chills.

I definitely only wear technical tees and running shorts for exercise now.

Just get too sweaty and horrible in a normal tee and have chub rub issues in longer shorts :-(

Not as convinced by specialist socks, but use a pile of them anyway...

There's quite a few places do cheap technical kit - Decathlon, Lidl, Aldi, the expos at the big running events...

And right now I'm really tempted by some of the compression kit that is suddenly very fashionable (Skinz, NikePro, UnderArmour,...) - will it really make me recover faster???

I popped into Lidl today to check out their running gear.
A new line starts tomorrow, 14/8 ( Long sleeve tops, running tousers and jackets ) all at great prices, and ideal for winter use. Thanks for all your answers, I shall be buying these soon to start my gear collection.
