running Jackets

I would like a running jacket but I'm a bit bemused about the different types on offer.

I currently have a very cheap Mi-Fit polyester jackets and it is ok until it rains but I'm looking to make things just a little more comfortable

so do I choose a good windproof or a rain resistant jacket or a fully waterproof jacket.

I would like something breathable as I do tend to get to hot in non breathable jackets. and even when wearing a waterproof you still end up wet either as water gets in through neck or from sweat so are they worth wearing. And how much do I need to spend as some running jackets are very costly

well without waiting for a reply I have splashed out and ordered two jackets and probably spent more than I should have. Although I did get some sales discount

inov8 race elite 150 stormshell jacket and a Arc'teryx Incendo

the inov8 arrived today and looks quality so I am going to keep hold of it.

I will just need to get out and do enough running to justify my investment

I would love to see a runner who can go out running in the rain and remain dry, has that ever happened?
No matter what weather I run in I end up wet , either with sweat or rain and sweat. I have given up on my expensive (ish) running coat it's just too heavy but it's great for the bike. I have an extra lite karrimor windproof which has become my main protection against wind and helps to deflect some rain.
I'm just content to get wet now, just make sure I keep defended from the wind (lol that sounds so wrong :-) )

Yeah ultimately whether it's sweat or rain, you're likely to end up wet. However when it's cold windchill can be quite nasty so a good windproof jacket is very useful. I have a Gore Running Wear "Mythos" jacket which is great for this. It's not cheap unfortunately, but it is pretty waterproof and genuinely breathable.

I also have a sleeveless giller-type Gore Windstopper top which is great for the current weather where it's not that cold, but when wet and windy it keeps your core warm.

you are right. a waterproof does not keep you dry but the running tops I have are neither water or wind proof and a cold down poor of rain just means instant cold
