You seem to be overlooking this.
How many of your fell races have you done with this weight on your back?
The event raises money for "Help the Heroes", though I don't think £20 is that expensive, as you get a free t-shirt, medal & chip timing.
If it's so easy I challenge you to do the bergen race in 1 hour 50.
Out of interest, have you ever tried running with a 35 pound bergen?
I know you're an experienced fell runner, but a bergen changes everything.
I have done harder fell races than the Paras 10, but achieving 1 hour 50 with bergen is a massive challenge.
If it was easy, then how come many hardened Para recruits fail it?

It has some mega hills!
The one at the end is near vertical!
Looking at the profile gradient I can't see any mega hills
the link you posted was www.paras10.co.uk
which doesn't exist
As for doing it with a bergen - been there, done that
Nijmegen Marches - same weight 40kms a day for 4days in a row
mind you it was a long time ago when I was in the forces!

I posted a working link in my first post, & on post 20, if the old link no longer works.
If you've raced with a bergen then you should know doing this in 1 hour 50 is no "stroll in the park", more so than probably anyone else on here.

Well they felt mega to me at the time.
I saw grown men cry, & I'm not joking.
I did some fell races before this, & they were all harder than this.
I was surprised it wasn't more difficult, but I say again, doing this course in 1 hour 50 with 35 pound bergen is not easy.
I've challenged you to it.
Come on down.
I bet you'd still do a good time.
You can't slag this race 'til you've tried it.

I've never slagged it off - just pointed out there are far harder races out there
Sorry won't be able to make it - I'm waiting for my Fell Runners fixture list to arrive
but that date is usually the Lake District Mountain Trial and next year it will be 50 years since I first did it so I hope to be there running (that shows just how ancient I am!) otherwise I'll be at the National Orienteering event at Malham on that day
Let's just agree to disagree about Para10!

Heya to everyone who remembers me, I'm back!
Switched jobs and didn't have access to this site in work. Anyway, I've come across this thread and I've also entered this race. A few fellow runners in my club did it last year so I thought I'd have a go with a pack and boot. Anyone else doing it?

Hi, yeah, I'm doing it with the pack and boots. I'm itching to get training for it but I've had a couple of niggly injuries since Christmas. I want them well sorted before I start.
Looking forward to it, should be good. Though at the same time I'm genuinely apprehensive!
Got my boots sorted and had thoughts about how I'm going to carry the load.
Have you had a test run yet? Its murder!

I've been going out with a pack since xmas. My first run was just with boots. Then the next two were with a very light pack, about 5lbs. I then went to about 12lbs for a couple of weeks and for the past three weeks, I've been up to 18lbs.
I'm taking things very slowly though as I don't want to injure myself. I'm also only training for it once a week and then just doing my normal runs 2 or 4 other times a week.
I tend to go about 4 miles with a few hills in it. I'm going to increase my weight to 25lbs this week and stay like that for a month I think.
I've not had any injuries so far apart from weak legs for a day to two.
One of things that bothers me about this race is I have no idea how to pace myself as running with a pack is still very strange to me. When I do a normal run then I know exactly how fast I'm running and whether I should be speeding up or slowing down. My worry with this race is that I will set off too fast. I'm aiming for a time less than 1 hour 50 and I should be able to do a lot faster, but I'll be happy with that time.
When are you going to start training for it?

Think I'll start about two months ago..!
Actually I'd planned on not doing anything much in the way of pack work until May or thereabouts, and up to that time just increasing distance on my normal runs. I keep telling myself there's plenty of time yet, but I'm getting edgy..
Its a tricky decision though. Do too much pack training and its asking for trouble. Not enough and I won't be fit enough. Hmm.
Sounds like you're well up on it. Yep, that all important 1hr 50 is looming large in my psyche. If I don't make that time I am going to be absolutely gutted. I have this recurring nightmare about staring at my watch and seeing 1hr 51 as I cross the finish..

Hi all, new to the site but already training for the P company race. Aerobic running up to 7 miles with some big old hills in there, bag and boots at 3 miles with 15lb. Long way to go yet but confident I'll be ready come September 13th.

Well, its May now and so on with the dreaded pack and boots. 5 miles with about 15 pounds - 43 minutes. Off road but pretty flat. Using the race time predictor I'm looking at about 1hr 30 for the ten miles.
Ah, but what about the hills, what about the extra weight I've yet to do? Worry, worry..
Actually its wind I'm most uneasy about. The other day I was out and it was windy I could hardly move forward. If its those sort of conditions it'll be murder.
Still, so far so good!

Good time Dave, did 5 miles booted up with 15lb in my pack, up some good hills too, took me 1:06 and felt OK. Moving up to 20lb this week and pushing the aerobic runs to 8 - 9 miles, hope the weather clears up.

Yeah, those hills slow you down a bit that's true. I'm toying with the idea of just walking up any hills. Its so knackering trying to run up them carrying weight, I'm not sure if the small gain in speed is worth the overall expended effort. Maybe a bit of experimentation is called for.
Oh, and I'm worried about getting swine flu the day before as well..
