I certainly feel more confidents about having a go at one. When I was up at Coniston there were some fell runners doing one of the Lakeland Marathons. Most of them were walking with a bit of running and checking their maps.

I'm currently reading Feet in the Cloubs and the Bob Graham is 72 miles I'd love to have a go but I don't think I would ever be fast enough but might attempt some of the legs as my confidence with running off road increases.

Have a look at either the Derwentwater Challenge 6th Sep (90% full)
Derwentwater Trail Race, Challenge and Sport Trail
or the Coniston Challenge 3 Oct (50% full)
Coniston Trail Race, Challenge and Sport Trail

The challenges cover the same course at the Trail Races, held on the same day, and start an hour before the TR, mainly aimed for the less speedy runners and walkers, so have a 3 hour time limit rather than the 2 hour for the TR. You can see a slide show of the course on both links.
Good introduction to the fells and well marshaled.

I've already entertered the Derwentwater Challenge - the course looks amazing and I think I might be running it with a friend. As I understand its fairly well marked and marshalled do possible to do it without any navigation skills.

You'll be fine - it's well marked and there'll be plenty of people out round the course.

If it was this weekend you were in Coniston then the runners you saw were almost certainly doing the Saunders
MM

Results are here

Probably later in the week they'll put the courses up on Routegadget.

If you manage the Derwentwater Challenge you might like to contemplate either one or both days of the Dales Weekend to put your navigational skills to the test.
Unless it's misty there are plenty of walls to use as handrails
Airienteers Dales Weekend 12-13 Sept 2009

PS If you want to try it only run either Orange, Long Orange, Light Green or Short Green
