I had a support group waiting for me at 17 and I knew Twinks was going to be at 22 miles, then it would only be another 4 miles to the finish.
Miles 18, 19 and 20 were hard... my head was telling me all kinds of lies. Mile 21 and I wanted to stop for a little rest... but I knew that would be fatal, besides Twinks might catch me slacking
22 miles and I looked out for Twinks... 23 and I knew I'd missed her. "Ok, regroup...3 to go...just 3 more and the pain will stop" I kept telling myself.
I went under what I thought was the 25 mile marker but it turned out to be the 40k marker... 25 came soon after. I started to feel sick. I should mention at this point that I actually felt hunger pangs just before the start...which concerned me. I hadn't eaten any less than I normally would. So during the race I made sure I had my gels and drank the energy drink I was carrying... even in the latter stages when I really didn't want to.
So I took on some more fluids and pushed myself on.
Then I saw a fellow female Hogweed, who is quite a fast lady and I'd expected her to be way ahead of me. I passed her easily and that gave me the motivation I needed at that point because I couldn't let her come back past me.
My garmin as still showing average pace of 8.02's, which surprised me, so head up, focus forward and ignore the voices screaming at me to stop.
Then the big sign said '385yrds to go', I turned the corner... the finish looked soooo far away. I picked up my legs and went for it.
As I ran across the final red mat the achievement felt real... more real than it's ever felt at London.
I was in a daze, could hardly believe it. It wasn't really until I woke up this morning that it finally sunk in that I had got a 3.31.34 finish time. A PB by over 9 minutes, and as even paced 26.2 miles as you could get.
stats say that i was:
4940th finisher
470th lady
62nd in my age group

Excellent run Trin............you've lessons to learn on story telling though..haha

LJ,Hollywood and Trin all put me to shame and I am so impressed with your times !!
I came in at a more steady time of 4:53:09 - I had been aiming for between 4:30 and 5:00 so was really chuffed that I had achieved what I set out to do.
It was my first ever marathon and I had the most fantastic experience, loved every minute of it. Felt good upto about 18 then started to struggle from 20, 21......22 almost killed me and then I saw my wife and 2 lads at mile 23 which really gave me a boost (mentally not physically )
I'd heard all the stories about how good the crowd were etc, and during the last couple of miles were amazing and gave me so much encouragement, crossing the finish line is something I will never forget. !!
(come over all emotional )
Words cannot describe how sore and stiff I am today !
PS, TT - shame I did not get a chance to meet you Saturday !!

Well done Granty...........those last few miles are fun aren't they!!
YOU'VE A PB NOW AND NEXT TIME YOU'LL SMASH IT I'M SURE!!

Well done Trinity, Hollywood & Granty,
Fabulous from all of you! Trinity I'd also sneaked a look at your result already and your ran a perfect race. I'm mega impressed! My graph on the London Marathon Results page looks like a lemming jumping of a cliff!
Granty! I know how you feel, I can hardly walk today & having to go down stairs is impossible! I'm not sure flooding the muscles post race with cider/lager is the best recovery method!!!!!!

Excellent running Granty!
Super also Trin - I'm hanging my head in shame about my contributions during miles 1 and 2 - I seem to have been a one man disaster zone!
As for the 101 year old man.... he's in the news.... firstly cos he did 10 hours(ish)... secondly cos he might actually only be 94... seems he's lost his birth certificate... Regardless of what his age is, well done to him (I kind of hope he was fibbing - I think it fits well with the Buster name)

Awesome stuff Trinity, Hollywood & Granty and well done again to LJ... (and anyone else I may have missed? )
Awesome stuff... watching it on TV made me sure I wanted to give it a stab next year - though I can't help but think it's going to be VERY painful

HUGE congrats to you both, that's freakin' awesome !! I saw an interview with the dude who organised the first london marathons, and he was saying how it brought the entire city together for a few hours, and everyone supported everyone and it was a great atmosphere - and its fantastic that still seems to be the case today
Any idea how much money has been raised for charity?

Thanks Katten, and Steepler... it means a lot to me to have you say that... cheers!
Rob... you said it, it was indeed a mission... sometimes I surprise myself at how determined I can be. Thanks
Steve... I could tell you the whole story...gory details an all if you want
LJ... ROFL! I'd like to thank Mr Garmin for my flat graph. My legs are fine...but I did the cold bath torture when I got back to the hotel... I wasn't keen but someone made me
Hollywood... you didn't affect my race that much, I was only running a little faster for a very short time before I realised. It was good to see you, and I promise I will know your name next time... I felt soooo bad about that for ages
Thanks Richard... we'll hold you to that!

Trin... my list of shame was loooooooooong. I can only apologise for:
- calling you by an old name (like where the heck did that come from? sorry!)
- mentioning RichK
- asking you how your neck was
- and a couple of other misdemeanours to other (forum and non forum) acquaintances...
As a small balance I did also
- tell RichK he was in front of the 3 hour pacer (which I don't think I actually did do, but is kind of funny if that is what I said...)
All this happened in the first two miles...Really I can only put it down to the excitement of finding myself outside of a portaloo for the first time in an hour... and I can only apologise.
Sorry!
:-)
H
(And also really very very impressed at how you've bounced back from where you were before Xmas!)

Hollywood... thank you soooo much, you make I laff
and as for...
- calling you by an old name (like where the heck did that come from? sorry!) it doesn't matter... you certainly got my attention
- mentioning RichK... he was already occupying my head and I think you actually helped me stop thinking about him
- asking you how your neck was... a couple of times as I recall...it's still not too bad thanx
but... - tell RichK he was in front of the 3 hour pacer
now that is kinda funny...
Seriously though, I couldn't have bounced back without peeps like you and other support I've received through these forums
