Considering that the entry fee for FLM is such great value for money and lower than some half marathon entry fees, I would suggest that the money is very well spent in making the organisation of such a world class event so slick

That's a great point. However many people bequeth their entry so a lot of money is going to go to the FLM trust.

So some people are happy to bequeath their money. That's their choice.
The organisation uses this to support local athletic development amongst other things. I don't see what the problem is.
