Only done the 10k.

Cross country is cool, but I remember thinking to myself "why am I doing this" on the 2nd lap.

hahaha After my first 6 half-marathons I finished telling myslef - "I'll never run this again!" - I have run more than 15 now

Just to add to the question... Does your favourite distance necessarily relate to your best distance? And do people have any sort of a system to work out what distances they are best at?

I think mine will have to be 1/2 marathons as are pretty much all I have done

I too have asked myself the question "WHY AM I DOING THIS"

Marathons are what I almost always aim for. I do enjoy 1/2s as well, though, since you recover much faster and it's less hard psychologically

to be perfectly honest with you... 800m ha! You only have to endure the pain for little over 2 mins, and I try to run hard enough that I hallucinate for a while with the endorphins afterwards - so that's always nice :-)

In my case yes but I think that's just a coincidence.
I think that very short races are over too quickly and even though they may leave you with good memories ( I will never forget 3 of my 800m races) they are always quite short.
Longer distances may "take too long".
The Marathon has it's magic because it is so hard to train for it and to stay healthy and keep it that way until race day.
So many things can go wrong that if you just finish it you have already been rewarded.

So, back to the point, I like races between 3K and 10K the most, because they give you a lot of time to test yourself and think about what's going on but not enough to start thinking about what's for lunch later (like I find myself wondering in most half-marathons).
