Well done Foxy, I don't think I would ever be able to compete with your achievements. What's your secret?......would it be lots of hills by any chance?

As I've mentioned before, living on top of the Pennines it's impossible NOT to run hills. So yes, hills make up the bulk of my training though I rarely do 'hill reps' as such. I have a couple of mile-long 1 in 4 hills locally that I incorporate into an eight mile run when training for mountain races.
But there's no SECRET. It's just a matter of hard training and application, setting goals, achieving them, then moving on to the next. Some winning runner once said, "The harder I train, the luckier I get". As I say to everyone, AIM HIGH. For instance, even though I'm coming up 75 I still have British Championships in mind, I still visualize Gold Medals! The whole point of my training is to be the best of my age, to WIN races, not just run them.
Life style comes into it too. You've got to make sacrifices. To get to the top you've got to live, eat, drink (or not drink, as the case may be) and sleep running. Some other thread asked, "What do you think about when you're running?" I think about RUNNING and TRAINING EFFECT. I ask myself, "What is the purpose of this run? Am I running correctly, am I running at the right pace, am I enjoying it? I have a little mantra to set my rhythm: Running loose, running with style, step by step, mile after mile.
And to keep me motivated I run in some of the most beautiful countryside in the British Isles. As well as a running diary I keep a nature diary to record such things as first wild primroses, first Ring Ouzel, first wood anemones, first new-born lambs, first Swallow etc. etc. etc.. If I lived in an inner city and ran mainly on tarmac with feral pigeons for company, I think I'd have lost interest years ago. Good luck with your running.
Cheers!

It helps me get into a comfortable rhythm that doesn't hurt. You should try it - while concentrating on 'looseness and style'.
Cheers!

Started running when I was 54 and had my first MV55 category win in the Pennine Marathon 15 months later - in 3.30.04. Twelve months later I broke the MV55 course record in that race - along with three other course records over the next few weeks, two over 10K and one half marathon. So of course there's hope for a youngster like you.
I think I've quoted this before on the Forum, but Joss Naylor once said "Running is just a question of training your mind - of implanting into your mind the will to accomplish the target you have set yourself". Once you've planted the seed there's no room for negativity. So get yourself out there Granty. Live the dream!
Cheers!

Very impressive indeed RF - I assumed you had run all your life. I will try and 're-train' the mind, for many years it has been living the 'failed band member' dream (does not fit too well with the lifestyle of a runner )

I'll show this to my old man, see if I can persuade him to come out !

I started running after I was made redundant from work, for the sake of something to do!
Be careful your dad doesn't beat you!
Cheers!
