Trainers / blisters

Just wondered what people thought of this.....

Since having Shinsplints I have been wearing some things to raise the back of the heel and 'support' the arches of the foot, since wearing them I have been shin pain free but the blisters that these things have caused me is unreal !

I have been this lunch time to a specialist running shop and they have suggested I ditch the 'high heel' inserts and buy a proper fitted pair of running trainers with support built in.

Sound like a good idea ? - I think its my only options as the blisters after about 30 or so make me have to slow down to a crawl!

If money allows then go for it! Though it sounds like the obvious thing for a running shop to say as it probably is the best solution to the problem, but equally means they're likely to get a decent sale out of it!

One question... is there an obvious discomfort when you wear the trainers? Or does it just become uncomfortable once the blisters have developed? Maybe be worth trying some of those 2-ply or twinskin socks (whatever they're called), they're supposed to help prevent blisters and I'd imagine they'd be a darn sight cheaper than a new pair of trainers too!

As I said though, if money isn't really an issue... get yourself some properly fitted trainers

Thanks Rich,

I have tried various socks, vaseline, surgical spirit etc, you name it I tried it, even running after 5 mins or so, I can 'feel' the hardness of this 'support' on the inside of the arch. As I now need to run 4 times a week for while, I really just think I'm not going to be able to do it without a different strategy.

I currently have a Compeed plaster over the area and this allows me to get upto about 4 miles but any more than that and I'm in pain.

Money is no object to me, it's the misus that has a problem with it

I'll buy her a mars tonight and approach the subject and report back

Granty, have you tried putting vaseline where you get the blisters as I find this often extends the distance before you get issues. Also, I personally avoid all running socks with the toweling bottoms in them as these seem to cause blisters on me.

Vaseline does seem to prolong the distance I can run before they flare up, but I'm guessing I really should need to worry aboout this after only a few miles, I've never had blisters before these things were fitted.

Compeed eh? I've heard great things about Compeed! I think it was Compeed Cream I remember being recommended...

Sounds like new trainers are the way to go then! I've never been one to like the idea of putting extra bits into shoes once you've already paid for something which supposedly has a carefully shaped insole to begin with.

Interestingly whilst cutting my toenails last night, after yesterdays long run I found that I had a blister, which had formed underneath another blister, which itself hand formed under another blister! Impressive stuff eh! lol.

In fact... what's more impressive is that I didn't feel a single one develop! Perhaps I need some Compeed?

Have you tried putting your heel support under a big, chunky, rubbery insole? Maybe that would muffle the hard edges that cause you blisters...

A 4-blister chain is pretty impressive  Definitely time for some compeed...
