I've run some pretty cold races... and take it from me, hats were essential!
There was one particular marathon in Leicester one year where I didn't even take off the plastic bin liner until about 6 miles into the race, even though I was wearing longs, base layer, long sleeves, hat, gloves and a buff around my neck!

I only wear a hat, one of the wooly ski hats, when its very cold. I'm not bothered about hats when its raining.
I've never worn a hat during a race, for no other reason than I've never run a race in during winter!

It amazes me more, the number of under-dressed runners I see in t-shirt and shorts, when it's just a couple of degrees above freezing... Often these people are also wearing gloves and a hat, so they obviously don't want to be cold. Attachment 378

Yep I wear a hat, only a thin one. Maybe I should let my hair grow instead of keeping it at a No1

I have a completely shaved head and run without any hat or beany. Even if it is -5 celcius, if I wear a beany I'm too hot after about 3 miles. sweating inside a beany is not pleasant

Mostly run at nights so wear a wooly hat also when its cold just common sense plus it stops my ear phones falling out..

I've never worn a hat/cap in a run so I wouldn't know... but I can't imagine it would be comfortable! I wouldn't feel free enought to run to the best of my ability!
