normally.... a big fat zero!!

I paid £50 for mine as it was a little more in depth, a running shop will 99 times outta 100 simply do it on the basis that you'll probably buy your shoes from them.

Hi to everyone this is my first post, new to running and the forum.

Im only 20 and am confused as to why i get pains in my lower back,I have been told through a chiropractor that my feet roll in slightly and from what iv heard on this thread it seems like a good idea to get a proper gait assessment done before i commit to training for events as i believe that my running style and pronation could be causing these faults.

I live in Hemel Hempstead and know that Bicster isnt too far for me too get to. Do you have a phone number or website for this company that did your assessment for £50?

Cheers.

the website is http://www.solutions4feet.co.uk, and I believe a contact number is on there.

Depending on what level of assessment you require, a specialist running shop will be able to give you a basic analysis of what your feet are doing for free when recommending trainers to suit your needs.

Hi Dan

Welcome to RF.

You may need to do some strengthening exercises in your abdomen area, this will help support your back.

Good luck with your running, it might even be worth entering a small race like a 5 miler or 10k to give you a target, plus you get all the excitment of race day.

TT

Cheers TT,

speaking of races iv just seen an advert for a 10k local fun run for charity in may im gonna go for it to test the water. One other question though the shoes im running in are for road running i think so would it matter that this fun run is on different types of surfaces.

For a fun run the shoes you are running in will be fine as at worst it will be mixed terrain but I would have thought mostly road.

Good luck you will love it

Remember, it's the people who aren't running that don't have the street cred.

Another string to my bow perhaps? Sadly the sport requires far too much patience and co-ordination for my liking!

ok so i am a little behind the times on this one, well about 2 months to be precise but the thread was flagged up to me by a friend

firstly thanks for the wrrite up Richard, hope all is going well

the assessment we carry out is done in a particular way because it works. The software we use is a this algorithm which profiles the individual based on key motion patterns

the main criticism of it from what i can see on the the few pages preceding this one is that
1 the machine made the recommendations
2 it only had a few brands available
3 i charge for my time

lets try and answer them

1 there are several hundred shoes on the market and most of these change at least once a year if not twice, if i could remember all these things then great but i have a life and other parts to the business also.. the data on the shoes is provided to the software manufacturer by the shoe companies every 6 months so we can update the database, the system works on the level of cushioning and support in each shoe also body weight of the user is a factor... the optimum shoes will be listed as 3* good 2* and well it generally doesn't go any lower as there are so many shoes this list for someone who is a slight someone will be a wide list including the more stable neutral shoes and supportive shoes also, if we are selling a shoe we start with a shoe which i feel will match both the support level we are looking at and the shape of the foot...no point having a great shoe which doesn't fit, some people prefer a softer shoe some prefer a firmer shoe, the idea is that none of the recommendations will cause harm, the operator then guides the client through their selections. we test the shoes on the treadmill to confirm the selection

2 any brand you like is available.... we run the software with the brands we sell + any others the client would like switched on[eg if you have a current asics shoe you may want to profile it for suitability], if you want every shoe on the planet turned on then we can do that, just confuse most people though.

3 I charge because i do not 1000sq ft of prime retails space full of clothing and accessories for you to buy, that is where the margin is in running, our business is built around injury prevention and footwear fitting for runners , skiers, footballers and any other sports person for that matter and people with every day shoes
to be blunt if i did not charge for our assessment i would be out of business very quickly indeed

hope that answers the questions posed but if anyone has any further questions please ask

For those interested the si an offer on for june /july at http://www.solutions4feet.com/news_item.php?wnID=888

Hi Colin... I had no idea you were a member on here! Things are going well thanks, still doing my exercises recently bought a pair of Asics 2130's which I checked out in the shop and sorted my overpronation perfectly. No idea how my dropping right knee is going though... I'll be sure to give you a call for another assessment around winter time I think.

Just in response to your post, I don't think issue '3' was highlighted as an issue at all. I certainly feel the price was well worth it as the analysis was well above and beyond what the local running shop would do, and also below what i'd originally expected to pay for such an assessment. Issues 1 & 2 I think you've answered fully

I would have no problem paying a physio to look at my running gait; to be honest, I'm amazed we even get basic gait analysis for free (very grateful though!)

RSK, I also use 2130s, very good shoes Brooks GTS seem similar
for the amount of pronation they correct, and also awesome

Thanks Colin, that would be much appreciated!

Katten, I was torn between buying the Brooks GTS and the Asics... I've always been an Asics man, but purely because they've been okay for me so I've never really tried another brand... I tried on a few in the shop and couldn't fault either, both very comfy, I just found the 2130's felt that little bit more familiar.

As I live just outside Bicester, it would be rude not to take advantage of the "credit crunch offer" .... looks interesting...
