I accidentally came into this forum because I was looking for 10k in Norfolk to try and redeem my own disaster at the GEAR run. I had no excuses - I was near the front (in fact I got pushed way up to the front) and I had run 35 mins, 10 days before, in the GYRR 5 mile series. Anyway, everything went wrong between 4k and going through Lynn's South Gate at 5k and I eventually trailed in at 46:47, hot, sweaty and annoyed.

However..... I then went back to Yarmouth last night and did a PB of 34:31 and feel alot better but it also got me thinking what a terrible race the GEAR is (and this isn't just sour grapes!). The course doesn't need to be through the streets of the town (this was dreamt up by Kings Lynn Borough Council as a way of drumming up supporters) and it doesn't need to start in Tuesday Market Place (which is a shocker for getting people parked and then into and then all that chaos/pushing/shoving at the beginning). By my reckoning, the council take about £20,000 out of ticket receipts and are more than capable of staging a race over a simpler course along the outskirts of the town with alot more space to accomodate 2000 runners. If it doesn't get much better next week, I think I will give a miss and leave it for the fun runners - it certainly doesn't help your confidence, especially if you turn up late!!!
Good luck.

Blimey, you really are having a streak of bad luck.

Hope all the bashed and bruised bits are OK today.

can my threes be the headaches. possibly, please say yes !!!!

Sorry about your experience at the GEAR Gav, but i see where you are coming from as to why it goes through the town, certainly did not help me feel better running alone to catch them up

But ill learn by my own mistakes .................. i hope

Leece, you need to go out to Beijing this year for the Olypics - Britain needs a new Eddie The Eagle

Sorry you fell over. Are you feeling ok now? I went down hard on concrete like a sack of spuds one time while out running when I tripped on a kerb. I got up and carried on for the remaining 2 miles despite the grazes and cuts everywhere. The next day I did 40 mins on a treadmill despite being in discomfort. Then - the day AFTER that, I couldn't move a limb and was in pain for a whole month. The crashing impact against my upper body when I hit the ground must have hit harder than I thought. I hope you've recovered a bit. And good luck with your next race.

Had a 10k Race booked in for sunday just gone.

Well Sunday, got up ate usual porridge etc, drank loads day before, ate well
etc, felt brilliant.

Left at 8.35 thinking it would be plenty of time to get there.

Picked up supporter, Well it got to 10.00 and we arrived in Kings Lynn
but cause its such a huge event (did not realise) the whole town centre road system was shut off, so you can imagine got stuck in traffic, well eventually parked down side road but
we still had to get to the market place in the centre of town so we
started to jog I looked at my watch and said to supporter "its 10.26 it starts
in 4 mins" by this time I was at the 7km mark
(obviously we had to run down this bit) so supporter said you run on so I ran as fast as I
could what seemed like an eternity.

I asked marshalls etc frantically where the start was they guided me to start and said
be careful they already started, they will be running down here. So I kept running, and trying to smile. (inside i could of cried)

Got in the market place, see the clock timer it said 04.10.23 I thought SH*t marshall shouted to me, just go .... As I ran through the crowds the
people chanted/shouted "ere luv they went ages ago", also
hearing children saying look she is well late did not make me feel any better, I was so embarrassed by this point I still had my normal glasses on (which i have never run in) i just thought sod it, I was completely worn out by this point already running as fast as I could to the start then having tocatch them up, I kept running and saw only crowds and hearing people say awww bless look she is late... I just grinned nervously and said yes i know

Anyways got round the corner (for what seemed like an eternity) and started the see the
back of the walkers/joggers, so I started to filter through the slower ones but I was
so tired, I run round corner and see my friend standing there with a look
that said OH DEAR, he said keep going your ok your not last, I over took
a few had to stop a couple of times to catch my breath also it was HOT
day, so I kept working my way through turned the corners etc, talking to
myself and KICKING myself that I cocked it up so bad, it could have been
such a good race for me for a PB, listening to people walking running
that it was not far to go thinking to myself this should of been a piece of cake for me
from what I achieved in the last year, anyways I got to the 7km bit
again (where I ran from near car to the start) and I knew it was not
that far.

So I just kept going for it, it came to the bit where you ran though the
town centre again with all the crowds watching, I could hear a few
people say that's the girl who started late and well done you for getting that far.

When I come to the 9km I sprinted to the finish with
so many spectators saying WELL DONE !!! I felt famous ha ha.

Well now I know I crossed the line in 1:12 something
which I know was very very bad for me, but the run to the start and
catching them up did it for me, I did well considering the circumstances I
nearly give up at the start, so considering the day I had I am pleased.

So gutted about it really as I really planned on
doing well but I can laugh a bit about it now, BUT at the time it was not
funny.

When i came through the finish line Ron hill stood next to me too and looked to me to
say well do you know who I am I did but I was so worked up on what happened that i just stood there and looked at him, he looked rather leathery .. felt like saying Ron whats with the mullet ??

Smiled at him though

So moral of the story is LEAVE WELL ENOUGH TIME FOR RACES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont think i am going to live this down with the Club .... can hear the remarks now
I see that as a very inspiring story. Most people wouldn't have run or given up.

Thats shows real strength of character and some serious testicular fortitude. Congratulations

SJ

Blimey Leece you poor thing but like everyone else has said it takes guts and determination to contiue running when things go wrong, you did tremendously well to continue well done

I have fallen over whilst running not only does the shock of the fall leave you wondering what the hell just happened but all your dignity goes with it too, not funny at the time but when I look back I laugh...

GEAR oh dear.

Sorry to hear about your disaster. Am new to the forum but I only came across it because I was looking for a run to avenge my abysmal GEAR run. Having felt in reasonable nick, having done 34:59 at GYRR 5 mile series race 1 ten days before, I completely cocked up and came in at 46:47. Then went back to Yarmouth last night and did 34:31.
What I do think though is how rubbish the GEAR is, from a running point of view. Oh yeah, you get the sights and sounds of my glorious home town (?!!) and the crowd was pretty good but why the hell does it have to start in Tuesday Market Place? It is a pain from a parking point of view (you weren't the only person late) and rubbish as a start (one of my mates recorded 3:08 to get from the gun to the start line!!!). Then why does it have to bend round every concievable corner of the town centre before going out of town? Given the Borough Council must have taken £20k or so in receipts, surely they could have closed the outer roads and had a circular run starting in the Walks (the bit where you had to go up and down the central avenue)?
I think I might give the run a wide berth next year, which is a shame considering I can walk to the start from my office, but I am sure that simple is best when designing courses which runners enjoy (GYRR series being a classic example).
Any views - presumably there were a few PB's at GEAR?

Will be back on 21/5. I didn't think the heat was too bad with the breeze as I didn't enjoy how cold the first run was.
