Running shorter distances more often

Had a bit of a lightbulb moment last night, and thought I'd run it by you people, see if my idea holds any water or not.

I'm recovering from Achilles Tendinitis at the moment - running a marathon then not allowing enough recovery and running a half the following has taken its toll on my poor body.

In the last week, I ran twice, a 7.25 mile on Monday, and a 9 mile on Wednesday. After the 9 miler, my Achilles was creaking a bit, so I have rested since.

Would I be better off running shorted distances, but more often? I was wondering if trying to run 3-4 miles 4-5 times a week might be a better bet than 2 longer sessions?

Any advice appreciated.

Eddie,

If it's long runs that hurt your Achilles, don't do them. You would be better served doing shorter stuff and making sure you strengthen them by other means

I suppose it depends on what you're training for.

The only way to see if that works is to try it., We're all built different, it might not even be the mileage thats causing your Tendinitis, just the repetitions of a short run might be doing it. I've had my share of the same sort of thing, always worse in the Winter for me for some reason!
Ive found getting ice on the area is a massive help, each time i run, i ice my ankle after and after doing this a few times it really makes a noticable difference to your achilies on any subsequent runs.

As always though, listen to what your body is telling you. Good luck, hope it stops creaking!

PS; When you find the secret, let me know!

How did it feel after the 7.25? better, worse, the same??? If better or the same, then I would say back down the mileage, try a 3-4 miler and see what it's like after that - better worse or the same... if better, then great! Do shorter runs, I would suggest still stick with 2 a week to start with then try 3 runs. IF the same or worse, sounds like a proper rest is needed and consult a physio again...

just the humble opinion of a novice....

good luck Gruff xx

It may well be better as long as you stick to the pace you'd normally employ. I started to go back and forth to work every, a grand total of 3k each way, and I ended up overdoing it.
