Is jogging mostly in the mind.. ?

I said to myself this morning i wanted to run for an hour non-stop on the treadmill in the gym. I did it, but it was tough !

I knew physically that i could do it as i done it last week. But a few times while running i thought about stopping as it was hard work and i felt a little tired. But i just kept going through will power and determination.

So i just wondered what people thought about this. Are runners in general determined people ? Do you need to be determined to run 10K and upwards or is it easier the fitter you are ? It seems so easy to stop and say, that will do for today !

Cheers

I believe most of running is def a mental thing, both when you start running and when you increase distance.
If you are not strong mentally, I don't think many people would get past the first couple of miles or first couple of months.
then when you start running half's or full marathons, the mind has to be right or you would end up walking or giving up, in my humble opinion.

I think running tests your mental strength as much as it does your physical strength.

I have the mental determination but the physical strength needs to catch up. So one is useless without the other imo!

I think when you first start running its about 75% mental and 25% physical
because your body doesnt know what its capable of but as the miles build
up for me its starting to be about 60-40 because although im confident i can
do the miles my body really isnt used to the stresses. If you dont have the
confidence or a goal in your mind before you set of on a run you'll struggle.

when I was training for a half I thought 12 miles was a long way to run, now Im training for a marathon, 12 miles seems like a short run.

Set yourself some do able targets and break it down into bite sized chunks and you will manage it more easily, I'm a bit hard on myself and very rarely cut a run short even if I'm having a rough day and I'm tired, I think this helps me because I've sort of told myself that packing it in is not an option.

BTW get off the treadmill, it's bound to make a run seem longer.

I was that tired from my LSR I didnt even see that it said treadmill.....
Get out on the road and get a change of scenery. I did a 10k on a
treadmill when I was staying in a hotel for work and it was so boring
its unreal and to me it felt nothing like on the road. To me the treadmill
is technically harder to use if you dont normally use one but easier than
the road because you dont have to kick as hard and even if you set it to
use hills the ground level never changes laike running on footpaths.

I have only just started jogging and at first was not confident enough to go outside. I have been outside twice now though and i did enjoy it more. Even before this thread i had decided to go for a half hour jog in the park tomorrow evening.

I know i need to make a transition from indoors to outdoors so will try this week to go outside

Cheers

I'd say mental strength takes up a big part of it. The other day I was out running and kept feeling like I wanted to stop but I had to keep telling myself it wasn't my legs giving up, it was my head. I carried on and ended up getting a new PB for 5km so now I know next time I go out that I should be able to achieve that time again and it'll only be my head telling me to stop, not my legs.

Certainly is - the mental boost I got from 'running in a pack' from this weekends 10k, surprised myself. I'll probably pay for that extra exertion later this week

LOL what a post!

If you're lazy you won't put miles in, you'll never reach a decent level of fitness.

If you're determined then you'll go far. I don't understand the post what so ever.

I hate running but see it as work that has to be done, then on race day you kick some ar$e & it's all worth it!

I suppose it depends on whether you enjoy it or not. I have been running for 20 years, and have loved every run I've ever done. For that reason, it requires very little determination or mental strength to do what I enjoy.
