It's those who don't participate in some sort of sport who are insane - we are using our bodies as intended, as they evolved to be used. It's especially important for the many of us who are in jobs which don't involve physical exertion, not only for the exercise but the stress release.

What a good way of putting it. Especially the stress release. I feel so much better after a run

I was just about to leave work tonight and I got all the comments of "that's a bright top, is it bright enough?" and "are you planning on being hit my a car or something?" but then I told them I was running home and they soon shut up. 13.1 miles home and they were shocked when I said I hoped to do it in under 2 hours
I do it because I am insance and I love the feeling of getting myself from A to B with nothing but the power of my body. I think you are right about your work mates secretly admiring your determination to stick with it, we all know what it felt like the first time we went out running, I doubt many of us would say they enjoyed it but then your body starts to crave it and before you know it your clocking up 2 or more hours running when everyone else is either still in bed or so pie-eyed that they wont remember what they did the next day!

Owain made a fantastic point in in his post which is one of the main reasons I love being able to run...

Now I don't head off-road as much as I'd like to, but when around Brecon Beacons... driving through the winding roads between the huge climbs, parking up with hills as far as you can see - Looking up, up, and up, and off into the distance - and then saying "I'm going to get there completely unassisted", and then doing it... it's bloody awesome

If i don't run i'm a complete A-hole, I have to run to let off steam, and love the feeling of pushing my body to it's limits, whether it be a sprint session or a 15 miler through mud and over hills, it sounds crazy but I love the pain it brings the feeeling of "can I do it" can I get that PB, can i run further than before, can I get to the top of this hill.
Plus when it all "clicks" into place and running seems like the easiest thing in the world it's an amzing feeling.
I also think we enjoy running because its such a basic sport, it's so natural and anyone can do it.

my friends at uni think i'm mental, literally, none of them can run for 2 miles let alone 15, so it's comforting to know that they're paying 40 quid a month for a gym membership when I can run for free, i don't understand who would want to go to a gym to run on a treadmill when you can run and see things.

Couldn't agree more. Gyms are such soulless places, and treadmills? What does it say about us as human beings that we invented a friggin machine that enables you to run without actually moving anywhere? If aliens came to Earth and went to a gym as their first stop they would probably get straight back into their space ship and bugger off. There are actually youtube videos of people attempting to run a 6minute mile on a treadmill and think they are awsome! Makes you just want to slap them. Ok, rant over. I know we outdoor runners are man, but indoor runners need a friggin lobotomy!

Not insane, but perhaps a little bit nuts, especially when it seems like a good idea to go running in the rain.
But then, even that seems eminently sensible when compared to running on a treadmill in a dark, dismal, stuffy gym, or jumping about in an exercise class to dreadful music while being shouted at by a sadistic instructor.
Mind you, people were looking at me like I was a bit of a loon yesterday and Friday mornings, but maybe that's because I insisted on saying Good Morning to everyone I met. You wait, I'll have them all smiling and saying hello before long. I think the bin men may prove the hardest nuts to crack. I'm not certain they even spoke English.

I love my treadmill I use it when I wouldn't run otherwise and it is dry and warm. It is not always practical to go outside for a number of reasons.
Also try running a 6 /mi on a treadmill without tripping and losing your teeth, there is no margin for error.
If that opinion makes me insane so be it.

I completely agree with you about running in the gym, totally mind numbing exercise. Needless to say, I love going to the gym and lifting weights and swimming.
Most of the folk in the weights room think I'm nuts when the see me wearing my half mararthon and 10km t-shirts in the gym.
