I have another challenge for Richard. Completely forgot about this one. I want Richard to run a 5k race before the end of the year and finally get rid of that 23:27 time that continues to bug the hell out of me. I expect him to run the 5k in around 16:30, but a sub 17 will be acceptable

My other half is running this event too. I'm not sure it can technically be called a "race", since they claim it is non-competitive and I'm not sure they even time runners because it is impossible to find previous year's results. I have a little bugbear about "race for life", because I don't believe in gender exclusion for any organised running events. Also don't particularly like the aggressive tactics of Cancer Research UK. But I guess I will still be going to support my gf in her "race". Ok, now I just sound like a grumpy old man so I'll shut up now.

I agree JB - too much pink and women walking(!!) arm in arm... I have to say my one race I did last year was badly planned really as it was 2 loops of a track, so the slightly more serious runners lapped the walkers, and it was hard getting past them! I think they should have organised the route a bit better. Its all for a good cause and all that (don't get me wrong - thats the main reason I started). Its great that it gets the ball rolling for some people though. I have also helped marshal for a Race for Life as well - and its run with military style... which puts some of the small club organised events to shame, but yeah, not sure why it is girls only.... maybe it started as more of Breast Cancer awareness??

Agree on the gender exclusion thing and the title 'race' (which by definition implies competition), could be a big long discussion on the matter, though I reckon it'd be rather one sided

It pleases me to know that it bugs you so much for that reason it's so very tempting to decline your challenge... but a challenge is a challenge, and I shall accept

I can understand gender specific events and clubs - women sometimes feel intimidated by male runners and it can be a barrier to them joining. I've run with a mixed club but now I go to a women's club and I actually prefer it.
