10k training programme

Having tentatively decided I might think about entering the Jolly Hog Jog 10k on 27th December (see bigcog's Yorkshire/North East meet thread), I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good training programme for an almost beginner? I'm currently doing 3-4 miles at +/- 10 mins/mile, three times a week, so it should be well within reach by then (shouldn't it??).

the runners world webby seams to have a few good ones..

but for 10km.. i think your best off just trying to increase your weekly long run.. 10km is only 6miles so not a huge amount more than your currently doing.

once you can manage the distance then comes speed etc

Thanks Beasty, I have saved the three times a week, eight-week one to my favourites!

I've just had a week off due to a cold, so I'm off out in a minute to see how much ground I've lost...

i'm new(ish) to running too and my 1st 10k is looming. I devised (with hints and tips from here) my own plan and so far it seems to work.

the advice you are getting about upping the mileage IMHO is good, i just started increasing the miles and somehow i can manage to go faster on the shorter runs.

One thing that has really helped is when running for "say" 7 miles, building in a harder faster block in the middle of 4 miles at race pace this way i'm getting the miles and some intensity too.

good luck with your race,

Craig
