Good luck guys!

Im on a rest day tomorrow so will head to the best and get some kiting in and then on Sunday I am competing in a Traction Kite Buggy Freestyle comp then abseiling off the Forth Rail Bridge in aid of the RNLI lifeboats, and then my training program is telling me I need to do a 20 mile run, I guess this will be the peak of my training and then the taper will start since its only 5 weeks until the Full marathon.

O.

I cant wait for this weekend..... Burton vs Exeter, should be a good match, straight from the pub (Im on water, I promise) after Utd vs Chelsea to the last match Burton hopefully play in the conference, bar the playoffs.

Me and my lovely girlfriend, will be off on a mild jog tonight, probably last around the hour mark, nothing too drastic for our first day running.

Have a great weekend everyone, dont get too drunk now.....

Whoa there Clampy!! - an hour for your first run???  DON'T DO IT.

It would take most people months to get to the stage where they could even consider doing an hour running. Take it easy - maybe even consider just walking for the first couple of weeks and then introducing short runs gradually.

If you do too much too soon you'll probably hate it (cos it really will hurt).

By the way, welcome to the Forum.

Sorry to be so negative on a first post...

Happy running

I gave a talk today at a postgraduate workshop, so they are taking me out to dinner tonight Hopefully, there will be some pretty female grad students there

I have no plans for tomorrow and sunday. Maybe I will clean my flat and go shopping. I want an xbox 360 so that I can play the new Grand Theft Auto Game I know it's sad. I'm a 34 year old man playing these dumb games, but it's a nice way to let off steam.

I second Slowsteve, Clampy, I'd been "running" for 12 weeks when I had to stop cos I hurt my foot and even then, I could only run for 17 minutes non-stop and my run/walk training sessions were lasting about 40 mins.

My first "run" was 1 min jog, 3 mins walk 4 times over, after a 5 min warm up walk.

I'd aim for something similar if I were you, although maybe more walking at the end if you feel up for it

one of my first ever runs was an hour plus..... cos that was the distance of the run in the duathlon i entered .. so i plotted a route and just gave it a go.

not pretty i admit and in hindsight probably not very sensible.

but it's not impossible.... or maybe i'm just 'special'.

Dont panic my friend. I said mild. I will do 5mins on and 5mins off for the hour. Plus, from the rowing perspective of my youth (Senior 2, for any rowers around) I am able to run for a hour. My only worry is the fact I now weigh 6 stone more, which is why I said an hour and not 2 Also, I have had my share of pain, I am accustom to it.

You might find that 6 stone makes a huuuuuuge difference. Seriously. Even if your lungs can take it it will be hard on your legs until they're used to it. I know what I'm talking about, being about 4 stone overweight myself (well, more like 3 now, but it was over 4 when I started running).

Maybe my 1 min run/3 walk times 4 would be too easy, but I still think that what you're talking about is going to be pretty hard going for a first run.

And didn't you say you're going with your girlfriend? You might be confident you can do it, but what about her?

I'd still aim for less for the first run - say 30 minutes of run/walk and a bit more walking at the end. If it turns out to be much too easy, then up it for your second run. Better that way than killing yourself first time out and being forced to rest for several weeks while your foot/knee/ankle recovers

Ok, Ill go with 30mins, on and off. Your probably right, I can do an hour, but my girlfriend will struggle to make it. Ill take it steady for now.
