Do you improve with age?

I took part in a 10 mile road race last weekend. The results have just been published.

I was impressed with the amount of veterans that finished around the hour mark.

there were 7 40+ and 5 50+ veterans in the top 20 finishers out of a field of 187 runners.

The winner was a male 50+ vet who finished in 57:30

There were 2 ladies that finished in the top 20, the first in 1:01:25

the conditions were quite difficult on the day too.

I came 2nd (well out of all the non club runners anyway!)

There's hope for me yet!

I think you can improve with age...if you're not Usain Bolt that is....well actually even he may improve but if by age we mean veteran age then he won't!

If i'm completely honest I think it's purely down to the fact that as age increases, training wisdom and dedication are much improved - younger runners tend to get easily disheartened/distracted etc if things don't come easily!

I was improving up to the age of 61 - but then, I didn't start till I was 54! And, although I say it myself, I was pretty nifty over ten miles.
Cheers!

Runningfox, yet again you have inadvertantly put us youngsters to shame.

Would it also be the case that people change the goals as you age. Eg. You ran a quick 200m a 17 but at 30 you race 10k and are still quickest for your age?
