Who assessed/diagnosed your injury? Did they give you any strengthening exercises to do?

It could be a number of things so it might be best to get it checked out by a physio or sports therapist but it possibly wouldn't hurt to do some quad strengthening exercises and work on your core stability a bit and also strengthen those glutes. Do you do any stretching?

When you bought your running shoes did you go to a running shop and have your gait assesed?

Sorry to be technical but shoes are important.

The problem could be caused by your shoes. When you bought them did you go to a specialist running shop or did you just go to a High Street chain? A specialist running shop will watch your run/walk and assess your running style (gait analysis) and then recommend some shoes for you to try on.

Some of us do something called overpronation is when the foot rolls in too much as it hits the ground it can place a torque on your knees. It might be advisable to go to a specialist running shop and get your shoes checked out.

I finally got over to Smithdown Rd today, paid £65 for a pair of training shoes called Brooks, they seem more padded than the rubbish I'm used too and the sole is much wider.Hopefully they will help clear this knee strain up.

Should I do small swats or go right down to the floor?

I got some gel bars are they any good?

Sorry to be a pain but thanks for your help.

M

Do you mean squats? Is this to strengthen your knees? If so no you don't need to go right down to the floor. Just remember to keep your back straight and you abs engaged. Keep your knees over your toes.

Brooks make quite a few models I think one of their most popular range is the Brooks Adrenaline, which is a stability shoe - is this what they sold you? Did they tell you if you overpronated?

Some people like to use gel bars - its more of an issue if you are traning for a marathon. Some you have to take with water except for the SIS go gels, which I don't find that unpleasent. I'm afraid its a matter of personal preference - try them and see if they help.

He said my foot would benifit from a wider sole if that helps.the shoe is called DRB or S.257, I'm not too sure. They are very comfortable and are good to run in. I don't know if that answers your question. Take care.

Thats not the model name. S257 is the cushioning that Brooks use and DRB is the technology that they use to control pronation. Sounds a bit like the addiction - I have a pair of these.

Enjoy your new shoes.

Sorry to butt in...but how did you get this knee injury to begin with? SE is spot on. Shoes are your no. one priority when running...no. 2 is a bra if you are a woman. Alos, date the shoes...don't marry them. You get around 500 miles on average out of a pair depending on shoe, terrain, body weight etc. Could be more...in somecases...could be less. Get a second pair about midlife to use for your long runs to prevent any potential injury due to wearing shoes that are showing wear and use your old ones for your short distances. Keep on keepin' on and good luck with the knee.
