Running gives me back pain.

I've ran off and on for years, just to keep fit, cultimating in a half marathon in 2003 then had a few lapses.

This year I started again and entered the 'castle to castle'.
I was running 3 times a week between 2.5 and 5 miles when I experienced back pain. That's nothing new in itself as I do a lot of heavy and awkward lifting in my job but I also experienced pain in both hips.
I was unable to run the castles' and I stopped running for 2 months.

When I started again I Initially was doing 1.5 miles 3 times a week . I did this for a month with no probs.
I up'ed the mileage over 2 weeks, while off work, doing 2 and then 2.5 miles.
The back and hip pain has returned I can struggle to walk and can't stand straight when it's at it's worst.
I always stretch out after a run.
When I have the back pain I always have tight calves and very tight hamstrings.

I also do a bit of cycling but nothing competitive.

Apart from a visit to the vet's any suggestions?

I have had problems with lower back after increasing running and have been to physio about this, and she said I also had tight calves and hamstrings which can have a bit of a knock on effect on your back I think. She suggested lots of stretching, and yoga. Might be worth a visit to a physio to look into it?

Hi 3spd

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your back, it must be so frustrating. I wouldn't for sure know what to suggest as the back is a delicate area and perhaps help from a GP or osteopath might be the best idea.

Sounds like a visit to a sports physio is in order.

If you email me I could send you some back strengthening exercises. Pilates and Yoga can be very beneficial as they can strengthen your core muscles so improving your posture.

When you run do you slouch or sway?

hi 3spd.

i'm surprised no one has asked the standard question with these sorts of enquiries....

what shoes do you have?
are they proper running shoes?
are they suited to your running style?

incorrect shoes and hence support of the foot can cause all sorts of misalignments that filter back up the linkages and cause knee, hip & back problems.

try and track down a physio with a sports or running based specialism, could always pop up to loughborough.

Lugger barugger is not too far from me, what's at Loughborough that you'd recomend?

In fact that's where I got my running shoes from, a shop I've used a few times and it's on a corner almost opposite a cycle shop.

I do know it's name!

I have suffered with similar and it was because my glueteal (buttock) muscles were not firing properly. Have lots of very odd exercises to do now!

PS how old are the shoes ? could always go back and ask their advice/recomendation on the problems you're having.

steepler,
yes Running Fox but I have no problem with them and have bought numerous shoes there.
Funny you should mention glutes because main pain seams to occasionally go into the outside of my gluts
