Leg Pain!
Can anyone help....?
My problem is a pain which runs down my right leg, below the knee, when I put any weight on the leg. I have been out running on it once since I noticed the pain, and whilst it isn't totally unbearable pain, it is a little more painful this week (after a long run at the weekend) than it was last week.
What should I do? I can't see that the doctor is going to be able to do anything about it, so do I go straight to a physio, or a sports injury specialist? Also, should I give myself a week off running.... I have the FLM coming up and I really could do with this last couple of weeks of training.
If anyone recognises my vague description of the symptoms, and can offer any advice, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Go to the physio NOW!
Do you really want injury advice off a message board?
Think about deffering that place for next year mate if you can't run now.

Welcome to the forum Sparky, how long have you had this injury? Is it around the shin area?

Hi there,
It is hard to describe the location of the pain, as it starts around the knee and seems to shoot down the inside of my shin. I do suffer with shin splints, but this is different. It started on Friday, after a normal club run, around 8 miles, and I managed to do 20 miles on Sunday, and whilst it was a little uncomfortable during the race, it never bothered me too much, but it has been fairly painful since then.
I am in two minds really, as I don't want to over react by going to the physio if it is something that will be cured with a bit of rest, but equally I don't want to leave it in case it is something more serious..... especially with the Marathon in the near future
That is some pretty emphatic advice from Steepler, and I guess it is a bit dodgy seeking advice off a message board, but I am fairly new to this, and have never really had any injuries like this before......

I'd take Steeplers advice, wouldn't want to jepodise the FLM. I suffered with shin splints too, plenty of Icing, anti-inflamitries, physio and rest sorted me!!
Good luck mate!!

I'll third the physio advice. A good one will be able to patch you up and give you the best chance of running FLM if you desperately want to.
I've held off going to the physio in the past and it's ended up leaving me needing more time off in the end.

..... looks like a visit to the physio then.........
I know this seems a bit of a dim question, but how do I arrange to see a physio? Is it the same as a doctor? Do you just ring one out of the yellow pages, explain where the pain is, and type of pain, and they make an appointment with you?
As I mentioned in an earlier message, I have never had any need for one before, so this is all new to me....

Unfortunately not, I live in Hull.
Are Physio's like plumbers/ should you go by personal recommendation rather than picking one out of the yellow pages?
Thanks for the advice by the way.

Someone at your club should be able to recommend a physio Sparky. You just ring up and book an appointment.
In the past when I've visited the physio we had a 5 minute chat about what the problem is, what kind of mileage and training I do and what he thinks might be the problem. A physio will then examine you and possibly massage the problem area to aid recovery. Expect to pay £20-£35, it should be worth it if you're doing the marathon in a few weeks.

As well as the fizzio, have you checked your running shoes lately, high mileage, worn out shoes usually causes these types of pain?

Hi Steepler,
I booked an appointment with one used by a number of people at my club.... going on Thursday. The pain is not as bad now, although it is still there, so I am a little more relaxed about it, but will still keep the appointment as there is clearly something not quite right.
Thanks for the advice though.
