If you take a look at his profile you'll see some pretty fantastic PB's, and I'd imagine he didn't get them by staying at home if he wasn't feeling his best.
Perhaps it depends what you want from your running? If you want to improve as much as possible and become the best runner you can be, then you have to be willing to push yourself to the limits. If running is more a means of keeping fit or losing weight to you, then by playing it safe there's less chance of your cold getting worse, but your running fitness won't improve as much as it could had you carried on regardless.
That's my 2p's worth anyway, and my apologies pedestrian if i'm misinterpreting what you've said or I'm putting words in your mouth!

I don't think I'll ever really get to the stage of running races etc, I'd just like to look as though I haven't after only running for two mins.
I seem to be really prone to colds and such and have had a very nasty one and a milder one this winter. I am still doing that beginner program thing that was given to me but had to miss a few days.

I used to suffer with colds all year round, I swear! Since starting to run my health has picked up no end, and although I do still get the odd cold, its one or two a year that last a few days rather than non stop sniffling.
Hopefully it'll bring the same benefits for you Oooh, and you may be surprised, I reckon you'll end up entering a local event sooner or later

... Yet we have posts which say that runners are more vulnerable to viral infections and colds etc... I believe that it is only the over-trained runners who are more susceptible to illness.
There's also the theory that stress can lower immunity to infection. Can excitement and anticipation (with the associated raised adrenaline levels) be regarded as types of stress? Is this why we often hear about runners coming down with colds in the days leading up to a big and long-awaited race?

[quote=pedestrian]I think that some of the "beginners" maybe give us credit for having expertise and knowledge than we perhaps don't deserve... and quite often a request for advice brings forth such conflicting opinions and advice as to leave the question unanswered.
Advice is generally derived from experience, and considering the widely differing experiences of the forum members, there's always going to be a certain amount of conflict I'm afraid.
I don't think it is necessary for you to sound so disparaging to other peoples advise at the same time, passing on information based on your own experience, because that is all it is advice. I don’t think what you do is right or wrong but you know it works for you and that all you need to get across.
I too don’t like to offend, and perhaps the way you said it, it wasn’t meant.

Sorry TT, I don't think I understand. I've read through the post which you quoted, and I can't work out where I've been disparaging.
I apologise If my post has been interpreted in such a way.

I'd be surprised if the anticipation of a race would be enough as I think it's the effects of long term stress that lowers immunity, I'm not a doctor though
I would be interested in seeing any studies on how the chances of colds are increased in runners just before races, my guess is that the chances are the same but the significance is increased to the runner and is therefore more memorable.
It has been my experience that I get less colds now that I'm running and they don't hit me as hard as they used to, but I've not been running long so it could just be a statistical fluke.

Hi Pedestrian, this can be a bit like email sometimes things can be mis-interpreted, apologies to you if I have taken your posts out of context.

Hi TT; I think I've mentioned something along those lines somewhere else on the forum: it can sometimes be difficult to gauge the intent and mood of certain posts, especially when we don't really know each other personally. It can be a little disconcerting when it becomes apparent that you are being "mis-read"
Anyway, I got you these... Attachment 51

Is this leading towards some sort of punch-line Cheriton? It's too early in the morning for me to get my head round the possible association between the Chinese and flowers.
BTW, is your new avatar a picture of you pioneering some new training method? Attachment 55
