Groin advice needed

Hi

I have only been running since February so still quite new to all this so your advise would be hugely appreciated.

About 2 months ago, the day after a run, I noticed I was a bit sore but unlike a general muscle soreness in my legs, this was isolated to just the inside right hand side of my groin. As the day wore on it became more sore and I was hobbling a little.

I was advised to rest it for a while so I didn't run for about a week and then I was on holiday for a week after that, during which time I only ran once and it didn't happen again.

2 weeks ago I was out running and the issue has come back, it was fine for the first mile and then I could feel it there and it got progressively worse as I ran. The pain was never so bad it forced me to stop, it was just uncomfortable and sore.

I was advised by a fellow runner to rest it for at least 2 weeks, which I did dilligently even though it was the longest I had gone without running since I started in February (showed me just how much I missed it!)

So yesterday I went out again after a 2 week break, warmed up and made sure I stretched gently but sustainedly (is that even a word??) my groin.

I ran a very gently ~10min/mile pace to start with but even then, after about the first mile the injury came back! I was really dissapointed but again, carried on running but only ended up doing about 3.5 miles.

Again today it's sore and uncomfortable. I'm not limping (which I have been the next day after a run when it's been at its worse)

Has anyone any ideas what this might be and how I can treat it?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest going to see a physio (a proper sports one) to try and work out where the pain is coming from. I went to a physio on Wednesday due to a pain in what I thought was my groin which was coming on in every run. Turns out it is my hip joint rather than the groin. Different treatment for that than there would be for a groin strain so it is worth getting it checked out to see exactly what it is, particularly if it hasn't eased off with 2 weeks rest.

Hey

Thanks for the replies. No lumps or bumps thankfully so hopefully a hernia is out

I did have a quick search on this forum for other "groin" related issues and the general rule of thumb seems to be - go get it checked out by a physio so I guess your right there Laurad.

Is that something I should just google for and pay for privately? I assume it's not something readily available on the NHS?

I am in the Medway Towns area of Kent, if anyone can recommend anyone?

Cheers again for all your help!

I used google, but make sure you look for a sports physio. The one I use works with quite a few of the local sports teams so reckoned it would be a good one. You can wait a while on an NHS physio whereas I called my one on Wednesday morning and was seen that evening and got as much of a diagnosis as they can give me.

Private or NHS depends. We are lucky in Torbay as you can see the NHS physio within three days and they are very good. Other areas a referral might take weeks.

I have just been told I have a hernia after thinking it was groin strain, do you get pain in the top of your thigh? If so it wont be a hernia. Try laying on the floor and lifting up just your head if you get pain doing that or if you get pain when you cough or lift heavy things then it could be a hernia, Try thoes and then go and see your GP, I only get pain after about the fuirst mile but not every run, I did a 10k in st Neots yesterday and it was fine the whole race.

Like I say try the things I have suggested and if you get pain go see the GP.
