When to return?

Ok, my hip seems to be mending OK since I hurt it - it's been over 3 weeks, I am walking fine and not noticing it, but I haven't walked a huge distance. I also managed to jog on the the spot today which I couldn't have done a week ago.

The question is - how long should I leave it before trying a run? Obviously I don't want to go out and bust it up again by being impatient, but it would be good to get back at some point before my idle side kicks in and starts telling me it would be a good idea to wait until spring

I guess there is no straightforward answer, but other people's experience/strategies of coming back from injuries would be helpful and interesting.

Thanks!

Sounds like you already feel you may be able to start running but you're honestly not sure... maybe map out a 1mile loop from your home (if possible) and set out on a steady jog... if you feel any pains then abandon ship... if lap 1 goes okay, maybe try a second lap, but limit yourself to a couple of miles at most.

Good plans Simkiss and Beasty

My plan was to give it another week to give the injury as much chance as possible to knit and heal, so I am going to pursue that, and then the 1 mile lap sounds best for me as I have no access to a dreadmill and would probably break it (I broke the pedal off my exercise bike today, the nut came loose, I've lost the tool that tightens the nut and the company that made the bike has gone bust - ever get the feeling something's working against you?! )

Rob, I would start by going for a hard brisk walk and see what happens before running. At first my ankle twinged if I walked on the tready so I gave it another week before I ran. And then it was for five minutes before walking a further 25.

After my last posts and almost going for a test run, I just felt walking around that it just didn't feel 100% right, so have delayed it to make certain. I have run for a bus a couple of times now with no ill effects, and am going to give it 1-2 more weeks to make absolutely certain.

Rightly or wrongly I didn't get around to seeking medical advice - but have never felt my doctor is a particularly useful one (I could predict "take ibuprofen and stop running"!). At this stage another couple of weeks is neither here nor there, but am becoming frustrated with swimming (cannot seem to swim fast enough for long enough to make it feel remotely worthwhile!) And exercise bike broke too!

as you mentioned, a couple more weeks isn't going to make much difference to the running but could make all the difference to your recovery. the time will soon pass.
Fartleking for buses is a good sign!

Might jinx me though!

It will be nice to exercise without swallowing half a swimming pool
