Lower back pain

Oh dear....to add to my crumbling former gymnasts body, I'm now getting a lot of pain in my lower back when running.
It goes away a bit, but always comes back.
If you've ever leant over the bath washing something, it's the same pain you get doing that!
A bad dull ache. Every step I run just seems to go straight to my lower back.

As it just keeps coming back, any ideas??
I think I'm falling apart at the seams......

i was reading that once the legs get tired that the back muscles start to take the strain/ shock.

there is a good article in the Dec issue of runners world that would be worth reading

Yeah, it really feels like the weight/strain is going straight to my lower back. Not particularly because of tired legs, but just after a few mins......

Thanks Twinks!
I haven't really done much for my back since I was a gymnast. I guess I'd not really realised you need a strong back for running.....
I wonder if swimming will help......used to do loads.

I've read that core strengthening exercises (a la Pilates) can really help your lower back, too, as those muscles can take some of the strain away from your back.

Pilates is gooooooooooooood!

I think the plank is a good one - and the one where you lie on your stomach and lift your head and your legs (and your arms stretched in front) - but not recommended for someone with a bad back to begin with!

Yeah, we do both of those in yoga too.

My Tae Kwon Do trainer gets us doing lots of others that are really good for the stomach muscles, but I don't think I can describe how to do them without demonstrating!

I've had the same - housespouse back I call it, and in my case it was worsened by stress last year. My doctor recommended swimming, which has helped a lot but the sea is getting a bit chilly now. I've just started some easy running again after over a year off and so far so good. How's it going now?

You should take a dip in an English sea if you want to know what chilly is!
Lucky fella living in Spain.

Back still a bit dodgy. Trying not to aggravate it, but if I run for a while, it gets bad. Hence my "speed marching" a lot at races, as this is ok for the back!
