Not sure if this should be in here or beginners...HR problems

Hey everyone.

I am a quite unfit and overweight 27 year old bloke (used to be a lot better but let myself go in last couple of years) and I have recently started running again....

Well I got a Garmin Forerunner and only just today looked at my HR results......it was up to over 180 when running....

I was quite tired and probs haven't had anything like enough sleep lately-would that affect my heart rate?

I just think that 180 seems dangerously high?

It was around 120-130 when walking, and resting is around 70 normally.

everyones HR is different.. and its alll about percentages of max (which i think is around 220 for most people)

being tired, dehydrated, cold, hot, ill can all affect Hr

have you taken a resting hr... i.e. first think in the morning?

Hi

When I first started running my HR would easily rise to over 200 bpm, it is unfortunately just a sign of poor fitness, this will improve the more fitter you become and you will find running around the 150 - 160 bpm will become the norm and even lower than that too.

Try not to run too quickly to try and keep your hr down even if you feel like you are not getting anywhere, but you won't be doing yourself any harm, your body will soon tell you to stop if its not coping.

I hope this help and keep it up, it doesn't take long to see improvements

TT

are you following any sort of training plan?

you might find that by going slower..i.e. lower heart rate would help you improve quicker

Was doing couch to 5k-interval running and walking. I will try to take it slower-I think maybe the lack of sleep was a problem too?

Thanks for the advice-I was just worried there was something really wrong with me if my hr was that high!!

That would explain it Don't go out and kill yourself on each run you will put yourself off otherwise

Lol thanks.....I just assumed (wrongly obviously) that if I was tired, my heart rate would be lower....

My HR can get that high easily. Just not so often as I get fitter If you can still breathe I wouldn't worry.

Hi D,

I wouldn't worry about the HR - concentrate on how you feel.

I have a heart 'issue' - my heart beats very fast. MY RHR is around the 120bpm mark. When running I can reach around 180/185bph. I've had this checked out - went for an ECG and had the results reviewed by a specialist. They're not overly concerned because I feel fine when it's at this level - no chest pain, dizziness etc - very rarely feel out of breath. I simply have a fast ticker! It's also been doing fine the past 31 years so now, rather than worrying how how fast my heart is beating I rely on my body to tell me if I'm pushing too hard. Pest because HR monitors are a little pointless for me!
