Unhappy Hope it's not a stress fracture

I'm supposed to be doing a 10 miler on Sunday (first race since the marathon in mid-September) and was really looking forward to it. I had a week off from running following the marathon and have just enjoyed doing whatever I felt like, ie, weight training mainly. Anyway, the second week after the marathon I did a 10 miler and the next week I did a 12 miler. All the time I was running the 12 I had a dull ache in my lower leg (more to the side of the shin than the front) so I'm thinking it's probably not shin splints. I've had these before and it's not the same pain.

I'm limping now and it does really hurt to put full pressure on the leg. I'm using ice every night and just trying to keep off it as much as possible hoping that I might get up one morning this week and it be cured! It hasn't got any better since the 12 miler at all.

I'm going to leave it until the last minute anyway to run or pull out of this race. The worst thing would be to start the race and have to stop half way around.

Has anybody out there had a stress fracture?

Doesn't sound good Cheryl. Shin splints are bad enough but this sounds worse....wouldn't race if I were you. Sports physio probably needs to have a look.

Sounds nasty Cheryl... although don't jump to any conclusions about what it is - from your description in could be lots of things. Also be proud of your body - it's got you to 2 marathons already this Summer - so it is allowed to complain a little!

Take your time and don't worry too much about the race on Sunday.

(Also... which race is it on Sunday? If it's the Cabbage Patch then I may well see you there - if you make it!)

I'm sure many of you will know where I'm coming from here but my doctor is a real "don't waste my time" sort of doctor. I've already been referred once this year to the specialist through her and of course the appointment was two weeks coming through and then another 1 1/2 weeks for the appointment. By the time that I'd waited my knee had sorted itself out anyway so I cancelled the appointment. You know what some doctors think about runners! I'm going to go down the gym tomorrow morning and have a go on the treadmill - see what happens.

I'm doing the Tadley 10 mile.

I have a comprehensive private medical insurance policy so should really use it but of course you have to get referred through your doc. You can't win can you?

Anyway, I pulled out of the race today but went down to the finish and gave some support through gritted teeth! It was interesting though as I never been on that side of the fence before.

Right decision made Cheryl.
It is good to go and support a race too...helps you understand what others go through!

Hope you get your problem solved soon.
