Im just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a website which shows a good warm up routine? I don't normally warm up before a run, I tend to use the first 20mins of the run to warm up but if Im just going for a short run, it might be an idea.

Any help?

O.

Well since you shouldn't stretch until muscles are warmed up - I'm not sure what you're supposed to do other than some light exercise (such as a steady jog?) I've certainly never done anything special!

I didnt realise that, so everything they taught at school was rubbish...warming up before playing basketball and the likes...in that case, Im happy to continue with light running before pushing myself :D

Whilst trying to sort out some site content, I came across this... which may not be of massive use to you O... but potentially of interest to any newcomers and beginners?

Warming Up
Warming up is an essential part of training and should always be completed before the main segment of a training session to help avoid injury. Warming up allows the body to adjust and prepare itself for the impact and abuse that lies ahead, it does this by loosening the muscles. Muscles are most stiff first thing in the morning (just after getting out of bed), between this time and when the muscle is fully warmed up, the muscle is likely to stretch by up to 20% (Ellis, Henderson 1994:237). Men’s Health Magazine states that according to the laws of physics, muscles work better when they are longer; they can exert more force with less effort meaning that longer muscles are much less prone to injury (2006). What about warming down? Warming down (also known as cooling down) will help to prevent stiffness in the muscles after a hard workout which helps to reduce the risk of muscle strain in future workouts.

Warming up is important - but it only needs to be a few minutes brisk walk or gentle jog, nothing fancy. Going from completely cold to suddenly working hard makes it more likely that you'll injure something, than if you do something which gets your body warming up without overly stressing it, first. I'd think that it was even more important before playing something like basketball, as you'd be putting your muscles under additional stress from sudden changes of direction, jumping, etc.

From things I've read recently, though, stretching beforehand is much less important and there seems to be some doubt about whether it achieves any good at all. If you do do it, you should warm up, then stretch, then start running. Don't stretch before your warm up.

Owain I have been off my feet since last Tuesday. I did a 3 mile jog last Monday and somehow managed to hurt around my ankle bone. I don't recall going over on it but......... the fact that I could barely move last tuesday/wednesday made me realise I had done something! I am feeling better but am still in minor discomfort, went for a stroll Monday night and everything seemed ok - but still not able to run. Didn't realise how quickly I had become addicted until I couldn't go out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will read again later to see how you got on.
