Sarah, sounds like it is upping the milage which has caused it....... ice ice ice and go easy...a sports massage could be a nice treat [sorry torture]

just out of interest.... when you say average milage what is that???? if you do 10miles a week a shoe will last about a year, 20miles a week and 6months is about it etc etc [based on average 500miles from a shoe, less for heavier person more for lighter person]

Footman, my shoes are 6 months old but have only done average mileage due to a knee injury earlier in the year. I'm pretty sure that my current problem is due to my sudden increase in mileage and the fact that I'm now doing alot more road work than I used to do. I'm hoping that the icing will sort it out .... don't really want to have to take time off running again!
I think I'm going to buy some ice-packs tomorrow and try them on my shins, having said that, its a bit early to tell but I'm sure my shins are easing off a bit since getting my gait analysed and new running shoes.

Footman, my mileage before I started my 10K training was only around 8 - 10 miles a week I think. Recently its been more like 12 - 16 so I'm sure I've got a few miles in my trainers yet. I have to admit that I have never had my gait analyzed when buying shoes (very naughty of me I know) .... but I've promised myself that when I get my next pair I'll go and get it done properly!

Singularity, I'd thoroughly recommend getting ice packs. I've been walking round town with my daughter all day and my legs have felt fine ... not a single twinge!

Singularity

the other thing that works well, especially when you are at work is Biofreeze gel, rub on and it gets deep into the area and lasts a few hours...we sell loads of it for shin and heel pain, you cvan get it in Boots etc also

not used that one, but biofreeze is "natural" so they say, the active ingredient is ILEX [which is holley based] it seems to last longer than the others i have tryed

are these those gels etc that sort of tingle and make you think the area is cold? or do they actually offer cooling properties?

It definately feels cold when you put it on but maybe it is just a tingling sensation. Its the same with a lot of these muscle rubs, you never know whether its actually doing any good. I'm sure I read somewhere that they do not penetrate into the muscle and its the actual massage from applying them that gives the benefit (and the psychological factor of using it)

not sure about the tech details of some of them, but i reseached biofreeze quite deeply when it was suggested to me as an item to stock.... try putting it on the back of your hand, within 1/2 hour the hand feels cold all the way through the ilex in biofreeze is shown to work deep in to the soft tissue

they [the makers] suggest not having to massage it in so not sure about the thinking there.... i put a dollop on my knee last night [not sure but we think it is a peroneal tear and it certainly soothed it loads and was still cold 2 hours later

Ok, I didn't manage to find any reusable ice packs. The only ones I could find in boots and the local chemist where throw-away ones (probably because they want you to buy refills).

Anyway, don't laugh but I've managed to find two reusable gel ice-packs that the misses used to use to keep her breast milk cold (they came as part of a milk cooler bag thingie) and I'm using those.

They work a treat!

if they work well enough then why not eh!!! I've often seen the re-usable gel ice pack things in pound-shops - back in my days as a student of course
