Shin splints and heels

Hi all. I have to be careful not to run too much because I have a tendency towards shin splints. After a summer of flip flops (even in the rain) and pumps, I wore my high heeled boots to work (no, not that sort of work.. lol), and my shins are more painful today than they've been in ages.

Anyone else thinks the heels might aggravate the condition??

(men feel free to answer if you have personal experience )

I always used to wear heels, but then when I started running I noticed they did contribute to shin splints and a foot injury I had, so I have since started wearing flat shoes all the time, and will only wear heels when I dress up.

it'll almost certainly aggravate the condition since it's forcing you to walk unnaturally and use certain muscles more than they're capable of.

I remember once reading from a science article that wearing high heels not only makes your feet go in an abnormal position(kinda like between walking with your toes and walking normally) but they also make your organs slide forward and that can cause health problems.

if you look at your leg when you point your toes into "heels" type position you should see what muscles are getting pulled and that should answer your question

Running is like mouthwash; if you can feel the burn, it's working.

The only muscle that seems to do anything is my calf muscle (and it's very difficult to look at your calves whilst standing on tiptoe). I've stuck to flats this week - not so glam but hey, who needs to look good... Sexy with shin splints or frumpy in flats. What do you think...

I think it doesn`t really matter if you`re wearing high heels or not.Mostly i don`t even notice if girls are wearing heels.I guess it`s some kind of a misconception that they are what makes a girl pretty.

Hi Mac,

I run for Southend Athletic Club and girls at the club do say that heels can cause this, they have all changed to wearing trainers going to work and changing into a moderate heel once at the office. I do have a couple of shin splint articles on my blog, they tell you how to combat shin splints.
