Women are definitely at a disadvantage when it comes to press ups (which i guess explains why we are often allowed to do them from the knees rathers than the toes).
I really struggled a long time before I was able to do decent full press ups (which where compulsory to grade in my kickboxing club). At the beginning, once my upper was down it would never come back up .
The way I improved was first by only flexing my arms slighly (lowering my body only a little). After a few weeks I was able to go lower and lower and still come up . I always struggled to do them from the knuckles though but blame my skinny fingers .
Oops I forgot another way to make it easierat the beginning is to place your hand on an elevated surface (stairs, worktop...).

Why are you at a disadvantage? You get to the ground sooner
Press ups, like running need working on and building up. Starting on an incline is a good way I find. But I am still rubbish

I never used to be able to do more than one, and even that wasn't all the way down, and was off my knees!
I still can't go all the way down from my toes, and I can only do one or two all the way down and back up from my knees.
But I can now do more than 20 off my toes, as long as I only go about half to 2/3 of the way down. I have to be able to do 20 for my Tae Kwon Do gradings. Partial ones count, but I won't be able to get full marks until I can go all the way down and back up!
It does get easier, but you have to keep doing them. And don't worry that you can't - you're very far from alone.

When I say I could do one - I could get into the position, go down about a quarter of the way, and painfully struggle back up. And then collapse
Honestly, I'm sure you're no worse than I used to be.

I'd say you've earned the right to show off! Enjoy it
It's definitely all down to practice, though, you're spot on. I've also gone from struggling to do about 3 dips, to being able to do 2 or 3 sets of 10, plus a few extra slow ones for added pain

I would have thought if you can do dips you can do press up .
I never tried dips, as I don't go to the gym, but they do seem so hard .

Nope, I'm useless at press ups. Need to practise!
As for knowing our limits, at least we can think about more than one limit at once.........
