That mile PB could have been sub 4 minutes if I could have run straight after my warm-up. I'd got my pace maker lined up (a guy who'd done 3.56 the year before) and got to the start rarin' to go. Then they decided there were too many runners for safety and split the race into two, numbers 1 to 45 in the first race and the rest in race race 2. I was number 46. By the time of the second race I'd gone off the boil a bit and lost my pace maker. Spit!
I'd lots of stamina so had no fear of marathons. I ran eight all together, winning my age category in seven of them. The one I lost was a bit iffy. The chap who won it didn't turn up at the prize-giving and I still suspect someone younger had run with his number. The guy who ran 2nd was subsequently barred from racing for two years for lying about his age.
I like your attitude Ross, a bit like mine, only more so! You'll go far. Good luck in all your races. Just think about what someone said, 'the harder I train, the luckier I get'!
