Yes, well done SE. I've only visited Manchester a few times, but it seemed to have an exciting city-vibe (if you like cities that is). Hope you find somewhere really nice to live.

Rob - Thanks for the excellent advice Altrincham is one of the areas I'm considering living and I've been night fishing with my Dad at Sale Water Park but I also really like it over Chorley way as well but is a slightly longer commute but cheaper house prices.

Twinks et al - I'm a consultant transport planner. I'm not a highway engineer so please don't moan at me about junction/road layouts. I'm particularly interested in transport policy/strategy and public transport planning. From a professional point of view Manchester is going to be an exciting place to work because of the proposed congestion charging scheme and the proposed public transport improvements. I haven't had the paperwork through yet for my new job so I've not given formal notice yet but I'm hoping to start at the beginning of October.

The next stressful thing is trying to find somewhere to live but I can always stay with a member of the family until I do but once you've left your parents its never easy going back.......don't want to fall back into teenager mode.

Thank you for all your support.

I've lived all over Manchester SE, and by far one of the nicest places I lived was Altrincham, but it's sooo expensive, but I was only renting there at the time, it's more of a quiet, leafy suburban area full of professional types (getting to and from there can be a bit of a chew though, as Manchester Road, the main route in and out gets frustratingly congested and I counted 29 sets of traffic lights on a five mile strip of it!!). Many parts of Sale and Stretford just down the road in the direction of the city centre are also quite nice and also popular, I still have family living there. I was working at Salford Quays at the time so those areas were ideal for me. Another extremely popular place to live is Chorlton which is full of a great mix people, pubs, shops and nice houses, a very vibrant place with a studenty/alternative style to it and only 20 mins to the city centre by bus or car and the Metrolink tram is currently being extended to Chorlton. There are some good new developments happening on the North and East side of the city now, I have a few friends from that side of Manchester, but I don't know a great deal about that area really. The only places I ever had any bad experiences were Hulme, Moss Side (where I was born), Crumpsall and Cheetham Hill areas, where I fell victim to burglaries and car damage almost constantly. I can only speak from my own experience but if you want to know anything else let me know

I'm planning on avoiding Hulme, Moss Side and Whalley Range. My Dad recomends Chorlton but said it does get a bit close to Moss Side.

I had to drive out to Altrincham for an interview Monday pm so agree with the congestion but it is very leafy. I won't be driving into Manchester as my office is right in the city centre. At the moment they are replacing the tracks of the Metrolink to Altrincham.

I've moved into Chorley - I've always loved it around Rivington Pike
