I've lived all over Manchester SE, and by far one of the nicest places I lived was Altrincham, but it's sooo expensive, but I was only renting there at the time, it's more of a quiet, leafy suburban area full of professional types (getting to and from there can be a bit of a chew though, as Manchester Road, the main route in and out gets frustratingly congested and I counted 29 sets of traffic lights on a five mile strip of it!!). Many parts of Sale and Stretford just down the road in the direction of the city centre are also quite nice and also popular, I still have family living there. I was working at Salford Quays at the time so those areas were ideal for me. Another extremely popular place to live is Chorlton which is full of a great mix people, pubs, shops and nice houses, a very vibrant place with a studenty/alternative style to it and only 20 mins to the city centre by bus or car and the Metrolink tram is currently being extended to Chorlton. There are some good new developments happening on the North and East side of the city now, I have a few friends from that side of Manchester, but I don't know a great deal about that area really. The only places I ever had any bad experiences were Hulme, Moss Side (where I was born), Crumpsall and Cheetham Hill areas, where I fell victim to burglaries and car damage almost constantly. I can only speak from my own experience but if you want to know anything else let me know
