Hi all, it's been a long time since I've been on here but am in need of some advice if I may?!
So I have just moved to Birmingham, semi permenantly.
I am living in handsworth from mon - fri and was recently warned that running after dark here is asking for trouble. With winter looking, that's a pretty depressing thought! Is it really going to be risky? Is there any other areas in the vicinity that are safe to run alone? I'm willing to drive out of the area if there are any recommendations within say, 10 miles.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, is it really that bad, is there evidence of runners mugged or attacked? Granted an inner city park at night isn't the most savoury place to be but can't you run around the block that you trust 4 or 5 times? Good luck

Solar, I'm sure "think" that this place is not as dangerous as you have been warned. Take a wander around in the light, go to a few local pubs and ask around. Get in touch with local run clubs and ask advise. I'm sure it will be fine.

It's not exactly the nicest part of town, but I also doubt you will have random attacks just because you are out running. Always welcome to join us at kings heath running club. Club operates a run for free policy also obligation to join.

not to be alarmist but you could easily get mugged after dark around that way. my advice would be to stick to the main roads and not do 'laps' of an area in case people cotton on to your route and pick you off. on the plus side your speed will improve when some guy is chasing you with a knife

I'm from near Birmingham. I wouldn't risk it as a woman :-( maybe a bit safer as you're a bloke, but I'd try to get a running buddy if I were you!

I have lived near Birmingham (weeks split between Redditch and Droitwich) and the only time I have taken a death threat seriously (and it happened while running) was in that area.
No, I don't mean to alarm you. I think the idea of joining a club or, at least, run with them a couple of times to get a feel about the place, is the best you can do.
Then you will know where not to go.
