No, not really. Cave diving isn't really an adrenaline junkie kind of activity. We discourage thrill seekers cos that's not really the mentality you want in a hostile environment...You need to be able to stay calm and think through problems and be very disciplined..there isn't much room for an error of judgement. The Cave Diving Group will happily turn anyone away who is a thrill seeker or adrenaline junkie - they tend not to last very long !!
We tend to be cavers who want / need to explore new cave either underwater or beyond 'sumps' (flooded cave passage) and don't generally entertain people who jump up and down saying "I want to have a go !" We tend to encourage already competent cavers who might have the aptitude and attitude for diving and set about training them through the group over 2-3 years.
But carrying diving cylinders and other gear through caves is hard work and running helps to keep my fitness at an acceptable level. Cave divers are pretty versatile and it's a very small community; we have mountaineers, climbers, paddlers, mountain bikers, skiers, runners, triathletes - allsorts - but our main passion is cave diving.

I enjoy a bit of SCUBA myself, never really done any in caves though. Surely they all look pretty much the same?

Depends where you go. Foreign stuff tends to be spacious and clear. Uk stuff tends to be small, squalid and zero viz, with a few exceptions. Every cave is different in scenery, challenge and character.

Ever been to Shetland CaveGirl?
Great caves on the cliffs there but maybe the sea's a bit rough...

No, but my house mate's Dad lives on Shetland so the offer's always there. Sea caves aren't really 'caves' - they are just 'caverns' beaten out of the rock by the sea. The stuff we're interested in is limestone 'karst' which is where acid rainwater has carved a path through the rock. Caves can be tens of km long. Having said that, I'm sure our caving club went to stay in Scotland a few years back and got some proper caving done. Trouble is, its the wrong sort of rock up there. South Wales, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Mendip is where it all happens. And France

Hi there Cavegirl,
In my 'earlier life' I did quite a bit of caving round the Yorkshire Dales, Gaping Ghyll, Easegill, Marble Steps and the like, but never did any actual diving, just crawling about in water! My mate still does a lot and is currently opening up new extensions in GG.
Then my clambering about underground changed to clambering up mountains, ticking off Classic Rock routes until, rightly or wrongly, I started running and have done nothing much else since. It's amazing how you can start running to get fit for other things then, before you know it, running has become the be all and end all and all other recreational pastimes have passed into oblivion! But I've no regrets. Running has given me an enormous amount of pleasure. If truth be known, I'm far better at running than ever I was at climbing or pot-holing!
Cheers!

Cool ! I expect I know your mate then, often go up there when the weather's good. You sound like one of these mad fell running types to me ...??? - I've got a job walking up the fells never mind running !!! But I know what you mean, running is becoming very addictive....just wish these horrible dark nights would stop drawing in.

If the initials JWG mean anything to you, or a website called Braemoor, then you'll know my mate. And yes, you're right about the fell-running.
Cheers!
