Ultra fuelung

Did a 32 mile event yesterday. For breakfast I had scrambled eggs with cheese. During the event I had nothing to eat at all and about half a pint of water in total. And I felt the best I have ever felt at the end of this event.
I have been eating low carb since June and it look likes it is really working well for my running. No more wall for me and no more carb roller-coaster.

Interesting. I did a 40 mile race on Sunday and I took 1 litre of energy drink with me, and went through probably another 2 litres of whatever it was they were giving out at the aid stations... Plus 2 gels, some chunks of orange, and a handful of sweets. Thats on top of the peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast

I really couldn't have got around on water alone, just wouldn't have happened.

Nutrition is a very personal topic. I don't eat or drink in marathons or long training runs but I know runners who drink 500ml in a 5k but personally I don't see the need.

well, I think Mark vs Sam here was more about fat-adapted vs carbs, not so much personal peculiarities when it comes to water consumption. I mean if Mark went back to high carbs, I suspect his water consumption would also change. It's two different fuel sources.. and with being fat-adapted you generally do require less water - been there, done that

I'm basing what I'm about to say on my personal findings based on me alone. I eat a crazy about of carbs and also eat processed sugar and I still can run for 3 hours without food or drink so I don't think the low carb vs high carb debate applies here.

I've always tried to use body stores and fat for running fuel so I'm saying the same as Mark??? I've confused myself now.

My problem is that I am not sure I could go to a low-carb diet... The food I love is generally high carb stuff, and the stuff I try to avoid as far as possible is the stuff that is promoted in a high-fat/low-carb diet (meat, fish, dairy, eggs etc.)

My understanding is that "fat-adapted" is better for low intensity workouts, if you want to go above 60%-ish intensity you also need carbs, you just can't convert the fat quick enough. A long slow run, you need less carbs, and can burn more fat, but push hard and you will soon burn through your glycogen stores and need to have some form of carb intake to keep going. At least that is how I understand it.

Well, yes.. your water consumption needs are peculiar to you..and it may not even depend on fat vs carbs, in your case, and you are just not a "water guy". Mark has posted in the past that he was adapting to LCHF diet over the past 9 months which I've done as well (incl. keto/ketosis) and water consumption does change dramatically.. when I was on carbs, I'd sip every 3km or so, when on keto - I wouldn't have a drop even when doing 19mile long weekend runs (in prep for marathon)

I was just saying (perhaps, assuming) that if Sam did LCHF, he'd probably be like Mark and would have less need for water.. and same (i.e. the opposite) for Mark if he went back to high carb.. I think my point is that it wasn't so much "personal" peculiarity it was driven by the outside factor, i.e. their choice of diet, mainly..

Sure! and no need... each to their own. Like Mark wrote, he stopped hitting the wall. Me too, when I tried it.. when on carbs, no matter how many gels I took really.. was struggling.. dunno, perhaps training wasnt good enough etc.. but with keto it just went away. No need for anything - just run like Forrest Gump. Sure, we are all different, and many carbs guys don't hit the wall during marathon. So, it's not really us vs them, it's just that we're different..

yes, none of the Usain Bolts of this world are LCHF guys, AFAIK.. but quite a few ultras are
